Im a 19 y/o HS Graduate an I can't land a job if my life depended on it, I worked @ a Major retail store for 2 yrs an got fired for absenses, now I'vebeen on Unemployment since November 08, How can I land a decent Job (NO fast food or any other resteuraunt) I really need tips. I'm pretty smart an Veryclean cut. I just get the short end of the stick, SMH

An is lying on applications a good idea, or making up jobs you've worked at? Im willing to get down an dirty to land a good job.
Where should I look?
How do I make myself more appealing for the Job?
Should I lie an say I didn't get fried from my previous job? just laid off?
Should I call an harass them for the Job?

Plz any tips from anybody mature.

ps- I filled out over 50+ applications since I lost my job.

hmm..

1. Don't lie, they WILL check up on your references.
2. look everywhere. network, ask around wherever you go. you're unemployed?... your JOB is to find a job.
3. Use the same code words used in the ad when you apply for the job.
4. see #1, unless you don't list your previous job as a references..although that will be somewhat fishy
5. Harass? no. Be persistent? yes.

Dunno what to tell you. Even if you got a job, if it aint one thing its another

I had a job secured for while I'm home from school, working with kids

Went through training and everything

The program director tells me and 3 other ppl that our background checks aren't yet clear (the day b4 we're supposed to start)

They failed to tell us that they take 2 months to go through the Dept. of Education....

Yes I'm mad

Some good tips so far thanks.

Would calling a job an asking if their hiring be a good idea? because I fill alot of my Applications out online.

I tried following up on application status but I keep getting the, "the hiring manager isn't here" or "we're in review of the applicantsan if you fit our needs we'll call you".

UP,UP,DOWN,LEFT, RIGHT CIRCLE AND X AT THE SAME TIME...IT WORKS

Oh and what kind of job are you tryna find?

Because not tryna play you but you can't get much decent work with just a hs diploma....

As a result of this recession you aren't only competing with ppl your age

ppl with master's degrees have had to double up on jobs

and the job you most likely want 4 a primary, they have as a second

^this...my friends who graduated college at the top of their class are having trouble finding jobs.

My advice: Put yourself in the position of an employer. Who would you hire? Look at your flaws when being compared to people like those mentioned above (withB.A.s and/or Masters). What makes you stand out?

For this bummy job in retail that I worked one summer as a teenager, I went to the guy in business casual attire, looked him the eyes, gave him a firmhandshake, and asked if he had any employment opportunities available. I also had a resume on hand and showed I was well spoken as we carried on theconversation. I definately stood out compared to the imature youngsters coming in baggy clothes asking "yo, you hiring?"

For my internship in college, the District Attorney came to speak at my school. When he was leaving, I stopped him and chatted with him until I got his info. Isent in an email telling him about myself and my plans in the legal/politial field and basically asked if there was any way I could help him. Once again, thismade me stand out in his eyes when compared to just any random college student even when compared to those who had higher GPAs and what not. This was as afreshman btw, so that shows its all about impression and standing out.

there's some validity to that though...best chances of getting a job is through someone you know

With that said
Valet Parking - Valet companies are always hiring...even if you only get a couple gigs a week its still good side $, plus get paid in cash
Restaurants - go to every restaurant and tell them you want to be a waiter...you'll probably have to start out bussing tables but a job's a job
Hotels - go to every hotel and ask for a job

Persistence is the name of the game

use this time to try to better yourself. theres a wealth of information out there readily available. yes its extremely hard to start from the bottom with nodegree but anything is possible word to KG.

Honestly, forget what Dirty said about lying (respectfully, of course).

My advice: lie on your resume (within reason)
logically think about it via cost-benefit analysis:

(0) assume- you have something to hide or dont want your employers to know (ex. your absenteeism/inexperience/etc etc)
(1) if you tell the truth about this - you probably wont get hired and will have no job.
(2) if you lie and don't get caught - you may/will be hired and will have a job.
(3) if you lie and get caught - you will be hired and then consequently fired for lying on your resume and will have no job.

Based on this and on personal experience (working 2 jobs in the financial services industry by age 20) i recommend you fluff your resume. Say that you workedat an additional place you may have not worked at (if your caught, say you worked under the table and they have no records of your employment). Maybe add aresponsibility or 2 at the job you worked at before, you get the picture. I'm not telling you to say you have an MBA from Harvard or that you were juniorVP at JP Morgan or anything ridiculous ya know, just enough to make you sliightly above average.

Are you in college, if not go to college.

Most people getting laid off are wage workers and sub-corporate level drones.

White Collar FTW.
