Tips For Personal Statements?

I'm generally an adequate (if not good) writer, but I am agonizing over writing my personal statement.  Does anyone have any tips?

To be honest, do not use one unless it's absolutely necessary (like an assignment for school).

Oops, I was thinking you meant objectives for resumes.  For my personal statement, I just told them who I was, where I came from, what I've done, and other relevant things of interests.

You are preparing to attend your 10-year reunion, and the alumni office has asked you to write a one-page essay about your personal and professional accomplishments since graduation. What would yours say? OR Please tell us more about yourself. Relate one or more experiences or circumstances that have contributed to your personal and/or academic development. If you have been out of school for a year or longer, please discuss your activities during that period of time.

Obvious tip is obvious: make it personal...

...the one I sent when I got into law school years back read like a diary.

I wrote about what it like was like to grow up in a DC hood, be best the best friend to the sons of drug dealers, watch their mother die from AIDS way before Arthur Ashe, how it felt to go to private school with rich kids and come back to kerosene heaters and plastic over your own windows in your room, how I didn't give two %$%#% about undergrad and why I got in so much damn trouble, and why pretty much _____ School of Law would be braggin' how I went to their school years down the line...

...people can sniff bull #%** quickly, deal in truth - make your personal statement something that stands out.
