Transformers Movie Thread - Tranformers x GI Joe Film in the Works

Damn, I already have my tickets but I was afraid that all of the "G1" homage stuff was just in one scene.

I hope the rest of the 1 hour, 45 min runtime has just as much cool robot action then.

Yup, I went in with low expectations for this movie and they were met. Yes, the first 5 min was G1 porn but I thought the rest of the movie only had 10 more minutes of actual enjoyable stuff.

After the opening scene, it was 90 minutes of lame “I miss my dad” mopiness by the chick. Like seriously, you were beat over and over the head with it. Everything Bumblebee did was for “awwwws” and cheap laughs. Humans were useless and Cena is the typical angry soldier turned nice guy at the end of every Transformer movie.

The only enjoyable parts were when the two deceptions were in scenes. And the end fight was actually pretty good too as it was finally nice to actually be able to see robots fighting for once without getting nauseous. And the ending which kinda wipes out the main Bay timeline, kinda.

Best nod was this.

Cliff jumper was in there for a hot second. I enjoyed that they toned down the transformations. They weren’t some super complex change, from autobot to car. Not the transformers I’ve been used to since 07-08. Which is good.

Bumblebee -- 3 / 8

- Wtf was this beyond the first 10 minutes? Damn, the jokes missed + pacing was so slow
- What's up with shorty crying for her dad every 2 minutes? We get it, she's depressed and rebeling
- I'm a fan of Steinfeld, but she fell flat in this -- prob bc she was acting against CGI (Bumblebee) -- go check her other work when she's actually acting with other actors
- Can we talk about Hollywood's insidious move? Sidekick is a light-skinned black dude (check the box: minority) who's actually a useless idiot (sound familiar? Peep Star Wars)
- Chena is a cool dude, but his character was just a caricature -- his WWE promos are more alive than his lines in this

I liked it, I didn't love it.

That being said it was better than the Michael Bay ones.

It had character development, though I didn't really care about the girl. It had some comedy, a lot I didn't find funny. Others in the audience seemed to find it funny.

The kids in school could have been cut out. It was cool to see shorty from Californication.

John Cena continues to improve.

doubt it beats aquaman, its already $482 worldwide with china close to $200m, will likely cross $500m by xmas time

last transformers movie got $220m from china and it is on a decline from before that and this one doesn't have the unnecessary asian cast to pull in those china numbers (age of extinction made $320m in china because they had lot of chinese cast and a good portion of the end was shot in china) but we'll see if the franchise still has a hold on the country

earning $21m on a projected $40m isn't boding well for its legs in domestic though

^^ I’m really curious to see if the Transformers movie brand has really taken a hit. Even The Last Knight legged to 644 mil world wide and that movie was awful. Bumblebee is the only Transformers film RT wise that is fresh on top of being certified at 90+%. It doesn’t get its release in a lot of international regions including China for another week as well so I feel like Paramount has a game plan in how they’re going to promote the film overseas. Wouldn’t be surprised if they get extra scenes for the film. I’m not exactly sold on Aquaman’s numbers despite it making a huge impact in China. That 72 mil domestic opening with even 45% drop next weekend doesn’t look great especially with all the competition next weekend. Want to see how weekday numbers play out but I feel like Aquaman will play like a slightly inflated Ready Player One

I saw the movie.

Probably the best Transformers movie outside of the animated one.

Cena got stuck in the prototypical military role. His humor and comedic timing still came through.

It would be awesome if they had a sequel where he teamed up with the autobots.

The beginning was awesome with the G1 nod.

Cliff Jumper and the robots (minus the Decepticons) were influenced by the old designs.

And isn’t Hollywood pursuing this diversity tactic (lead female, black side kick) after years of complaints?

whats its competition next week? i don't see anything dethroning it the next few weeks

its biggest competition was mary poppins and was surprised that that film barely made it past bumblebee to nab second place but aquaman was about $45m above it, that was very unexpected

$605m (not $664) for the last transformers movie is a big disappointment considering the the two films before that made ~$1.1b each, imagine that ~$2.3billion in the last two films and then $605m after

hell $605m is the lowest since the first one and aquaman is already about to reach $500m, aquaman easily opened double of ready player one so i wouldn't even say it is "slightly inflated", that made $580m ww

and was we know, the transformers franchise isn't really affected by rt score, if anything the highest score might be the ones that bomb on the box office

Movie was solid outside of teenage melodrama. If you go in knowing it’s a kids movie then it makes sense. Overall it was simple and to the point. No twists of anything which worked out well.

G1 megatron make an appearance tho?
Sadly...... no

I don’t know what comes next with this new series. The part of the kid is over. They either make it all about the autobots or they have John Cena play the role of human and completely change the tone

They can do other small scale stories like this.

I didn’t like the contrite plot, stereotype military, etc but this was definitely the best live-action Transformers movie.

There was definitely hella retconning (see Sector 7 and Megatron).

If they add more autobots and decepticons the small scale wouldn’t work within the scope of the past movie. That is unless they finally give us a majority autobot led movie.

It wasn’t exactly ret-conning, as they were leading up to the first TF movie with all of that and even explaining his loss of voice and turning into ladiesman217’s Camaro at the end....until they said F it and had Prime and Autobots come to earth already.

So why’d they even bother with all that when they just should’ve had Megatron leading the Decepticons on Cybertron from the beginning?

I actually think this film ends up out grossing Aquaman world wide

It’s doing good-but-not-great ($40m in two days) in China, so the question becomes is this the hard work being done for a breakout sequel or a franchise whose time has passed? With a likely over/under $400m global cume, I’m guessing Paramount and Hasbro roll the dice.

Warners Bros’ Aquaman has topped The Dark Knight Rises to become the highest-grossing DC Universe title ever at the international box office. The fish-guy has now caught $649.3M overseas for an $887.6M worldwide cume through Friday.

The $900M global mark is well within the Trident of Neptune’s grasp today, and $1B is certainly a possibility in the coming weeks, depending on how screens hold offshore. Japan is still to open on February 8.
