[h6]Matthew 5:39

"But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

When Jesus was alive, people of a higher social status would backhand you with their right hand to humiliate you. By turning the other cheek, you say to them, "Use your left hand too." Only peasants fought each other with both hands, so by having them raise their other hand to you, they ran the chance of others seeing that they regarded you as equal. Food for thought...

I don't believe in that, i thought this thread would be something deeper with more meaning.
I was wrong.

It means don't throw down with people who are disrespectful and bad people in general. If they treat you bad, have the control to check yourself and hold your ground.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

stopped reading right there.

I get it. Obvioulsly if someone is threatening your life, then you would defend yourself.

I can understand the "Turn the other cheek" philosophy, although I wouldn't advise it in today's world.

Let's be honest, 90% of fights don't involve self defense on any level. It's not self defense if you can run or give up after a couple punches and avoid the all out brawl. But the social ramifications of that are too harsh. So guys fight, to prove themselves.

Turn the other cheek is saying don't let society dictate your manhood by lowering yourself to the base level of animal instinct. The problem is society still inherently values a strong alpha male that can defend himself, even though that isn't a skill necessary to thrive in the civilized world.

F'n a.  There it is.
Now /thread.

It's about being humble and passive.

This teaching in no way at all points toward self defense.

The full passage, which MUST go along with this verse is such:

You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. Give to those who ask and don't turn away from those who want to borrow.

It teaches that you must show forgiveness to those who have wronged you and show them that you live differently by not having revenge or anger or hatred in your heart.

A similar passage is found in Luke 6:27-36

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

My first thought when I read the thread title was obviously MLK, then I thought of his work as a pastor. On point.

I've never associated this with actual fighting, or the Bible for that matter

To me it's when someone tries to put you down, talks @$%@ about you etc etc. You "turn the other cheek" and be the bigger man. It's about not sinking to their level and letting them get the best of you.

I always thought that was stupid.to not defend your self is a sign of submissiveness and weakness.

It's a sign of weakness in the eyes of the person who wronged you. To God and those who matter to you, it is not. If you come back with violence it shows that you are no different than the person who wronged you ... which is what these passages are teaching.

So if somebody os bullying u would just let it happen and pray they learn a lesson while ur face gets re arranged.

You should still defend yourself against getting your face re-arranged but you shouldn't do it in a way where you try to re-arranged their face. The main topic of these passsages is about going the extra mile and showing that no matter how badly someone hurts you or wrongs you, you still show love and acceptence to that person. Never hate.

Don't fight with your hands, but fight with your words. Pray for those that have wronged you.

If you are fighting with your hands, there is a good chance you said or did something to tempt the other person. We ought not drive others to evil, but instead treat everyone with respect and be slow to wrath.

No one will have a reason to slap you on the cheek if you practice restraint and continual prayer.

That's what I got out of it.

(I need to get back on my Bible reading tip. I was overcome with joy reading the passage and understanding its meaning.)

What I usually get out of the text. I believe the "turn the other cheek" is more of a philosophical meaning than a literal meaning; However, considering the age of the text, I could be wrong
