I'm not sure I get the point… It seems quite similar to like a facebook status or aim away message in which case I'm not sure I get why aim or facebookisn't good enough. Basically I'm curious to know what does twitter do that aim away message or facebook status doesn't?

It doesn't do anything that status messages don't. It's just another program. Just like AIM = Yahoo! Msngr = Windows Live Messenger =ICQ and all that other stuff. Twitter also has a ton of apps for the phone, iTwitter, TwitterBerry, TinyTwitter (for BlackBerry), Twitterific, and so on. Theyalso have TwitterFox for Firefox. You can upload pictures using TwitPic or link articles using TwitterURL

Twitter isn't a social network in the traditional sense; it makes more sense if you look at it as micro-blogging or macro-text messaging. Ideally you would follow people whom you already know in some form or another and would like to stay connected with them throughout the day. Think of it asgetting a personalized dynamic newsletter for each of your friends and acquaintances.
