just use the live cd/usb before you install it to the hard drive.
if it can find all the drivers on the live cd your good

The laptop didn't come with any cds though.
Somehow she ended up with a virus on it that I could not get rid of, so I just used an old Windows 7 cd that I had laying around and formated the HDD.
I don't have an activation code for that disk, so I'm thinking about just putting Ubuntu on it instead.

Only way I can get a disk from Toshiba is to order it

Whenever I grab a new laptop I'm putting Ubuntu on it. I like Lubuntu a lot on the machine we use it on. Figure I'll try the full version soon, would put it on my main rig but I play too many games that need Windows

Its honestly not that hard to create a virtual machine. Trust me as a person who used Ubuntu throughout the years as their primary OS if you want to use windows software you are better off just creating a virtual machine so you can run it properly. WINE is all cool and whatever but its just not the same where as a virtual machine will run it EXACTLY how its supposed to be. If im not mistaken there is a seamless mode which allows you to integrate the virtual machine into your gui.
