if you "quit" you won't qualify for unemployment....

find a way to get "fired"/layed-off

Why don't you just apply for other jobs while you work there, wait until a solid job offer comes, and give your notice.
This is not the right time to be unemployed.
It's easier to get a job with a job anyway.

That's a TERRIBLE idea.  I work with people everyday who thought that they had a deal without having something in writing.  First of all, saying you were laid off/fired when you weren't is illegal.  Second of all, if you only have his word there's nothing to stop him from stating otherwise when you quit which brings us back to the first point.  It's ILLEGAL.  Third, when they lay people off, they have to contribute more to the state unemployment office to compensate.  I don't think his boss will be too happy with that, especially if there's no track record of wrongdoing at the office.  If you want to quit while you're in school, just do it.  But don't expect any unemployment.  Take your internships and run with them.  Take responsibility for your own actions and don't expect the taxpayers to pick up the slack for you not wanting to "work for pennies".  Your internships will more than make up for it with the job you get right after that.
