All jobs aren’t created equal. In fact, some are simply better than the rest. U.S. News 100 Best Jobs of 2014 offer a mosaic of employment opportunity, good salary, manageable work-life balance and job security. Some careers offer just the right mix of these components – for instance, nearly 40 percent of our picks are health care jobs – but the list also includes strong showings from occupations in the social services and business sectors. And for the first time, our No. 1 pick is a technology job.

The Best Jobs methodology is divided into two components: The first is how U.S. News selects jobs to profile. The second is how those jobs are ranked against each other.

Selecting the Jobs

To identify professions that should be included in the 2014 rankings, we started with data on jobs with the greatest hiring demand, or in other words, the highest projected number of openings from 2012 to 2022, as categorized by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The jobs at the top of our list were then selected for the 2014 Best Jobs analysis and rankings.

Ranking the Jobs

U.S. News ranks jobs in an overall list and in category-specific lists, such as "Best Health Care Jobs" and "Best Technology Jobs." Occupations are ranked based on our calculated overall score, which combines several components into a single weighted average score between 0 and 10.

The overall score is calculated from seven component measures: 10-year growth volume, 10-year growth percentage, median salary, employment rate, future job prospects, stress level and work-life balance. For each measure, jobs receive a score between 0 and 10.

Here are the component measures and their weight in computing the overall score:

10-Year Growth Volume (10 percent)
10-Year Growth Percentage (10 percent)
Median Salary (30 percent)
Job Prospects (20 percent)
Employment Rate (20 percent)
Stress Level (5 percent)
Work-Life Balance (5 percent)

Best job = one that you enjoy doing.

Some people are absolutely miserable although their occupation offers great compensation.

For those who have both, nothing is better.
You hit it on the head, my friend. When I was pre med, so many were in it for the money. There are some really lousy doctors out there, as a result, they're always accepting new patients because no one comes back.

I'm surprised to see high school teacher up on the list. I truly think public school teachers are underpaid and it's really a profession of care and love.

Tough being a lawyer now. Grads from top schools are stuck in a bind. Too qualified to become paralegals and can't find jobs.

According to this, if I want to get paid, I need to get computers putin

#65 Hairdresser

No wonder all these chicks go to beauty school

the hairdressers i do know personally in my state all do well

they grind though, but yea it can be very lucrative

if they can do makeup also $$$, weddings an lil stuff on the side 80K+, no bs

the number 7s on the list are way happier than the number 6s i know

looking at the list again.......i wouldnt take it as all that fact, i mean it varies for a lot of reasons, RN for example can be big diff from one facility to another

dentists off themselves, though

i know this list is by money.com, but work-life balance at 5% while salary is at 30% says alot about our society and what we value

you are right

because RN work life balance sucks, reason why so many of them smoke cigs

also ive heard that thing about dentist before.......i dunno, its a pretty cushy gig, my mom works for herself when i was younger she hated life when she had a boss and other things she dealt with, beame her own boss real quick

the ones with their own practice are prob happier

Used to. Dentists had the highest suicidal rate. But not anymore.

Any job in the medical field requires love. My mom is a retired RN and dad is a doctor. There's been lots of times that they worked 24 hour shifts. They both love what they do.

Don't let the list demotivate you, young dudes. Even if your job is not on the list, you will be successful if you continue to challenge yourself. Heck, my occupation isn't even on the list at all :lol

Keep in mind success doesn't equate being affluent. It's accomplishing the goal you set out to do.

Don't believe the hype in the list though. They only look at certain factors.

What I want is the best least stressful job out there.

Whats the sense in making all that money when your slowly killing yourself from it.
