I saw it in middle school on VHS and guessed the ending. Hated it ever since, but that's just me.

No, not exactly. Everything probably went very similarly to how it was explained. Soze changed the story only slightly enough to satisfy the cop, and changed names and stuff to keep from incriminating himself I guess. I thought that was the point of seeing Kobayashi (or whatever his real name is) at the end.
