It depends, if you're not a power user I dont really see needing anything outside the basic. Hell if you dont do anything intensive (Photoshop/Gaming/Encoding) a computer with 2005 specs will serve you well. Only concern I could see is if you want to watch 1080p movies but that's easy/cheap to do nowadays.

I game and write code. I'm just going to put linux on my laptop and use that for coding whenever it comes towards the time.
Alienware seems like a nice machine to start out with don't ya think? I went through and picked everything I wanted and it ended up a couple hundered over 2k.
Will it be cheaper to just build my own with greater than or equal componenets? The only thing that I really have my mind made up on is an
i7 processor, a TB hard drive, and least 6gb of RAM. because those are really the only things I know about.

When it comes to MOBOs, fans, power supplies, cards and the rest I'm lost

Its been a while since ive priced a complete system but you can definitely do all that for a much lower price.

When you actually price all of the things the manufacturers use when building their systems, what they charge will leave you like

and it's not even a hard process to build one anymore, either. my mate and I had one up and running within a couple hours.

It's not hard at all to build your own computer, I put together a great one for less than $400 and I'm not even that knowledgeable in tech. I just spent time researching compatibility and how to put it together. I put it together on 1 weekend and it was pretty fun actually.

omgitswes just go to newegg.com and look up about power supplies and others. motherboards were pretty confusing for me but if you know what you're doing, it's not hard. just make sure you spend time looking up power supplies, because some of them really are better than others. it's been a while since i looked into pc parts but when i did corsair did get great reviews.

and for compatibility:

motherboard has to be compatible with the RAM, a PCI express for graphics and SATA slots for hard drives and optical drives. The wiring is pretty easy cause alot of it's labeled and you just connect the power supply cords to the different parts. if you need help just ask.
