I am going to a St. John's game at Carnesecca arena in January. It's going to be my first time visiting New York so I am clueless about everythinginvolved with my trip.

Are they any fairly nice hotels close to campus?

Any good restaurants?

Best place to buy St. John's gear, at the arena or at the university book store?

Any places to avoid or things that I should definitely see while I am up there?

There aren't any hotels within walking distance, actually. Wherever you stay, you're gonna have to take the bus and/or train to get to Carnesecca.

Not a lot of "big" restaurants nearby. Do you mean big as in well-known national chains? There's a diner across the street and some small Italianplace a few blocks down.

The surrounding area is safe but the number of robberies has been going up recently in the past couple weeks. Still, I think you should be okay.

I was looking for more non-chain restaurant, something that is more unique to new york that I cant find else where

There really isn't anything in that area. The only restaurant in the area that's worth mentioning is Acquista Trattoria (the small Italian placementioned by briannnnn).

Well the arena is a stones throw from the bookstore.

To visit the city, take the q46 bus to Union Turnpike subway station.
