LET'S GET IT!!!!!!

This team is in GREAT shape financially, and has a lot of flexibility with their roster.  66 game season...I want them to hover around .500.  This is a BIG year for John Wall and I think he has a chance to establish himself as a top-5 PG in the NBA.  One guy who I am really excited to watch is Chris Singleton.  He can flat out get after it on defense.  Anyways...here's to a good year...

*there's room on the bandwagon too

This is going to be a rising team in the East in a few short years.

The cap situation is probably the best among all the teams in the NBA. They can just let the season play out, see which players develop and which players are worth keeping, and then make moves in the off season to bolster the squad.

I'm keen on finally seeing the rookie in action. I'm hopeful he and John can develop chemistry over the season, as he profiles as a strong finisher at the rim, and can run the floor quite well - perfect for the uptempo style I had in mind with John running the show.

Make or break year for Javale, we'll see if he spent the lockout clowning around or working on all aspects of his game. If it's the former I think it'd be safe to say he'll never get it.

As for John Wall, I have high hopes regarding his progress. DMV sports have been incredibly depressing, and he's an electrifying talent who can be an absolute star. The city is his for the taking.
Don't even care to see Blatche. The sooner he's gone the better.

Hell yea!  I can live w. Lewis' contract because he's not toxic in the locker room or on the floor...the sooner blatche is gone, the better.  On top of it all, Lewis is expiring after the 12/13 season.  Even w. him on the roster, the Wizards still have plenty of space to have some roster flexibility.

I'm going to be secretly rooting for the Wizards this year, John Wall has become one of my favorite players and looking back at the draft I think the Wizards had the best turnout of the whole thing honestly. I don't like Blatche at all hes not worth the trouble and would hope he gets amnestied so you guys can start building this young squad, but it'll probably be Lewis.

I think you guys can do what the Pacers did last year, and what the Thunder did two years ago.

All things considered, I think it will be Blatche who gets the amnesty. Cap is set at ~58 mil and we're current sitting at around 40 mil. New CBA necessitates an 85% figure, so if you take Lewis out of the equation we're around 20 million, when 49 million is the target figure. Unless they want to sign player after player to reach that number , they should just keep Lewis on for two years, make a few smart signings, and let Blatche go.

I would trade Blatche for the Hot Dog vendor on the 4th level of the Verizon Center...Dude has no work ethic and has the lowest Bball IQ of all time, nice guy in person though.

I hope Wall has been putting in work during this lockout and comes out making strides.

Will definitely have to make it to the phonebooth to see some games this year. I'll be curious to see how/if Wall improves his game in his second year, and even if the team's not great watching Vesely and McGee catch oops will be worth the (cheap) price of admission.

That's a valid point, and you can make a case that Blatche should be the one you cut loose, but I still think Lewis is the way to go.  If you keep Lewis, the plan is to stand pat and tank another season in hopes of securing yet another lottery pick.  (Historically speaking: Bullets Plan A.)  Why spin your wheels when you could try and gain traction?  If you cut Lewis now, you can be a real player over the next few weeks.
Why not make a run at someone like Nene and front load the contract?
The Wizards' cap situation is only stellar if you bear in mind that your core is playing for rookie scale contracts.  If you want to keep that group together, anyone you add now has to come off the books by the time Wall's eligible for his new deal - which could conceivably be a max deal (~30% of the cap) under the proposed terms of the next CBA.

I think you're better off doing what OKC did with Nick Collison: overpay him in the short term so that his compensation level is reduced precisely when you need cap room to re-up Wall & co.  Under no circumstances should you emulate Chicago: cap yourself to hell and then expect that, somehow, everything will work out when your rookie-scale star is eligible for a max deal.  Blatche's salary is fairly reasonable given his production, meaning it's still possible to find a suitor for him down the road if need be.

The new cap restrictions will make a lot of players available and, amid all the chaos, an unencumbered Wizards team could potentially stock up on surrounding players on the cheap.  Lewis is NOT a part of this team's future.  Why not try and lure away a good restricted free agent with a front-loaded deal that a team flirting with the luxury tax would have trouble matching?

Now, in all likelihood, Denver brings Nene back.  They have the lowest payroll in the league.  Even so, you can make a run at someone like Tyson Chandler, DeAndre Jordan, or Marc Gasol to get tougher up front.  (Gasol isn't a good fit for a running team on paper, but if you can't execute half-court sets you'll never do any real damage in the playoffs.  Plus, you need someone who isn't afraid to mix it up down low if you insist on starting McGee.)  Hey, I'd rather take a 3 year flyer on a one legged Greg Oden than keep Lewis for the next two years (or year and a half if you really think you can get value out of him in exchange for cap relief.)  At least that way your placeholder physically takes up space ON the court.
And who knows what happens with other teams' amnesty selections?  You'd rather have the cap space to try and scoop somebody up than not.

Let's face it:  even IF you overpay guys JUST for the sake of reaching the minimum, you'd rather overpay guys who can give you long-term value.  Even if they don't fit in, in two years their compensation rate drops dramatically under the front-loaded deal and they'll be a bargain value well suited to trades.  What's the point of holding on to cap ballast?  Trading Lewis next year will yield another team's spare parts.  Wise use of the amnesty now prepares pretty much half the teams in the league for the Howard/Paul sweepstakes.  A big expiring contract next year doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dwight Howard isn't going to play for DC.  Embrace the fact that you're not getting Howard and take advantage of the teams clinging to false hope.  Now's the time to get BETTER and make Washington a franchise worth playing for.

Great post Method Man, and your proposed approach to the amnesty clause is certainly viable, but for a few reasons I still believe Blatche should be the one to go.

I suppose it depends on your philosophy regarding team building. Personally, I don't believe that signing up a bunch of vets, and contending for a 7th/8th seed is anything to be excited about. Not only can that lead to perpetual mediocrity (think Detroit with the Gordon/Villanueva nightmare), but you then miss out on what figures to be a stacked draft next year. Signing up a bunch of veterans sounds good in theory when considering all your points, but I don't think you go that route without having a definitive core. My philosophy (and indeed many others, such as OKC) involves acquiring two or three top players through the draft, maintaining long-term flexibility, and filling out the team with vets and role players when the time is right. We don't know for certain what we have with Vesely/McGee/Crawford, so why not let them play big minutes, and find out for sure? Who knows, they may even be decent this year depending on John's progress, and also fun to watch.

There's certainly going to be a few FAs and amnesty players worth signing such as Gasol, but who worth signing would actually come to a threadbare team like DC? It just doesn't seem like the right time to splurge on a bunch of mid level FAs. As a fan of the Skins, O's and Wizards, I would love to see progress in the form of wins, but I prefer we do the smart thing, and hold all our chips until we have a hand worth playing. Keeping Lewis may net us a draft pick, (or perhaps even the ability to package and trade up) as well as major cap room around the time we'll actually need it.

Granted, they likely will amnesty Lewis, but I think you may not be appreciating the underlying value of getting rid of Blatche. He's a cancer, plain and simple. From his work ethic, to his game, to how I've seen him interact with his teammates on the court. I'd hate to see John get disillusioned in DC by playing next to that clown for another four years. Yes, he's productive, but inefficient production at the cost of good team play is the absolute worst kind.

@ Meth popping up.

But yea I am excited to see Wall in action under a real whistle. Top 5? Not sure about that though. CP3, Deron, Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, Nash. He has a ways to go to get there, but of course he has promise. But I don't see that big of a jump this season.

I want to see if McGee grows up on the court. Same with Blatche and Nick Young.

Do they continue to bring Nick off the bench in favor of starting Michael Jordan Crawford?

My philosophy (and indeed many others, such as OKC) involves acquiring two or three top players through the draft, maintaining long-term flexibility, and filling out the team with vets and role players when the time is right.
Keep in mind, that's also been the pet strategy of the Golden State Warriors, LA Clippers, the Toronto Raptors, and, yes, the Washington Bullets/Wizards.  Playing the lottery year in and year out isn't the only way or even the most reliable way to contend for a title - but it has proven, year in and year out, to be the surest road to failure.  After all, it's the only plan that relies on failure.
Good teams can rebuild quickly because they can move productive players while they still have value.  Just look at Dallas.  How many lottery picks have they needed?  Their last top 10 pick came from Washington in exchange for Antawn Jamison.  Sucking for a year isn't a sure-fire recipe for a top 3 pick - and a top 3 pick isn't a sure-fire method for landing a future All Star.

The last time Washington actually had a decent team, it was built through TRADING young players/picks - not sitting on them and hoping that they'll grow into a title contender.  The Wizards have nothing BUT young players right now.

Send Blatche to the d league if you want.  It still costs you less than dumping Lewis now - and I'll take PROVEN commodities over players you MIGHT get in the next two drafts.

What's going to disillusion John Wall more: playing with Andray Blatche (whose combined salary over the next FOUR YEARS doesn't amount to what you're paying Lewis for the next two) or winning a total of 45 games in the next two seasons?  In today's NBA, good luck signing up a star player if all you've done under his tenure is lose miserably.  John Wall would rather go to the playoffs with Blatche than become a league laughingstock in exchange for a 25% chance to land Harrison Barnes.

John Wall isn't going to pick up good habits by losing alongside a bunch of inexperienced players.  If you want to improve the culture of the franchise, bring in better players.  Bring in guys who know their role.  Build a program.  Get professionals in there who understand exactly what's expected of them, who aren't fighting for contracts or playing time, and whose primary goal is to WIN.  They don't have to be 40 years old and if it DOESN'T work, in two years you have a productive player available at a modest salary.  How hard is THAT mistake to fix?

Don't forget: proven players can be exchanged for draft picks AFTER the ping pong balls have settled.

The worst team in the league has only won the NBA Draft Lottery four times in league history.  It's just a bad gamble.

Do they continue to bring Nick off the bench in favor of starting Michael Jordan Crawford?

I think the better question is: do you bring him back at all?  Crawford's made him expendable.  If Crawford isn't the long term answer at the 2, and I don't think many people realistically see him as a starter on a title contending team, then you can bring him off the bench and have him give you exactly what Nick Young supposedly gives you now:  a quick trigger and "instant offense."

That cash can be better spent elsewhere.

Want a combo guard?  Obsessed with "character" guys?  Portland's likely to use their amnesty on Brandon Roy.  If he's injured, you suck and you're in the lottery.  That was your plan anyway.  If he returns to form, you're deadly.  If he's marginal, you have a great trade asset for a contender.

This isn't your slightly older brother's amnesty clause.  Players waived under the amnesty clause are NOT FREE AGENTS.

In the 2011 version, teams UNDER the cap, like the Wizards, will get to bid on amnesty waivers.  There are bargains to be had here.

The argument to keep Lewis has been expressed elsewhere: http://www.bulletsforever.com/2011/...s-the-amnesty-clause-and-the-new-salary-floor, but its proponents always manage to neglect three key points:

1)  We're not getting Dwight Howard.  That's not even a remote possibility.

2)  None of the other unrestricted free agents in 2012 make sense for us.

3)  All of the "keep Lewis" articles ignore the possibility of front-loaded contracts.  If you throw $22 million in year one at a restricted free agent, the rest of his deal can be for drastically less.  Want Jeff Green as a glue guy off the bench, but think he'd be overpaid at $9 mill per year?  You'd be right.  What if, however, you pay him $15 million next year and only $5 million a year for the following 4?  Now you're talking.  Green comes back to GTown, it doesn't hurt your cap long term, and it's impossible for Boston to match the offer.

Trade Nick Young while his gaudy numbers still hold some weight...He can put up numbers on a losing squad, but I don't think he can contribute to a contender consistently.

Tevor Booker showed some promise last season and I like his intensity and hustle.  Evans is a solid role player who is not afraid to do the dirty work.

What I'm looking for is an improvement w. his jumper and a decrease in his TOs.  From what I've been hearing, he's been putting in a lot of work this summer w/ his jump shot.  Top-5 may be a stretch, but it's not unrealistic.

I love Crawford's upside, but he's not better than Nick Young (yet).  He's a high-volume scorer and should be groomed into being a starting shooting guard rather than forced into the position like last year.  If Young is not retained, then we'll see the type of player Crawford is after this offseason.  We all know he can fill the stat-sheet, but he's VERY flawed.

From his work ethic, to his game, to how I've seen him interact with his teammates on the court. I'd hate to see John get disillusioned in DC by playing next to that clown for another four years. Yes, he's productive, but inefficient production at the cost of good team play is the absolute worst kind.

agreed.

Completely agree about Wall and picking up a jump shot.

If he had a jumper he would be top 5 PG to me maybe num 5 but still lol.

Excited for the season.  I don't see us making the playoffs but can't wait to see john run with Vesely.

I was excited with the Vesely pick as I knew watching people like Dirk win a championship and having an owner like Ted would all but force him to pan out. I have never been on the McGee bandwagon and I am still laughing at those of you who are holding on for dear life. All I needed to see from that man was the game against Cleveland (?) when he tried to get the triple double. He has no business as a starting center in this league.

Blatche and McGee need to be gone by next season for this team to make any semblance of progress. John Wall and Vesely will be two of the top players at their positions. We need to find the SG and PF/C of the future before the start of next season. This team has promise, but with so much dead weight it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
