I'm looking at learning web design from scratch, and I want to know...

Where is the best place to begin lerning about web design? My initial thought is HTML/XHTML/CSS, but I'm not 100% sure? Maybe things have changed in the current day of the web? I ordered a huge book on all three subjects, and I dont want to waste my time learning it if it's not going to serve as much of a benefit? However, it's always good to know the rudiments of anything you're starting, right?

I find it funny that you say that, because the post you linked has references to w3schools.

I'm saying though. Son just googled "learn webdesign in 30 minutes" and posted the first link he saw. 
w3schools is one of the best web development resources on the web.
