What can you do with an Economics degree?

My dad got a degree in Economics and his job has nothin to do with it.

that's what i'm majoring in....you can do a lot...you can be an analyst....or have a job that completely different from your major like most people....

You can say big words that nobody knows and talk about the stock market.
People will marvel at your intellect an bow down at your feet. Or you could manage a Popeye's.

The real question is what can't you do with an Economics degree?

Yep..quite a few people have jobs that don't pertain to their major. Ti's why it's important to intern before you get that degree...so you candecide if that's really what you want to be doing in the future.

I had a friend who was about 6 months from graduating, and he decided to intern for the summer. Dude said "that's what I'm going to bedoing??"...he switched major and it held him back a year..but now he's doing what he really likes.

Also waiting on Rex's post. You guys don't know this, but don't take a class with Rex. He actually flips the curve around 'cause he alwaysgets over 100%...so a score in the low 80s is a solid C.

Why do you say that?

My friend has an Econ bachelors and a masters and he is currently still looking for work.

Long story short, degrees are just pre-requisites for most jobs nowadays. It's just to see if you were committed to getting that 4-year degree. Unless youare in some sort of specialized field (engineering, the sciences, etc..), it's almost like a high school diploma.

And BTW, unless you are already far into your career, experience > masters.

You sir, are bugging. An economics major is one of, if not the most generalized majors. Also, to throwed in paticular, why would you even bother mentioningneurosurgery

? The amount of graduate school required for that rendersthe undergraduate degree pretty much useless.
The thing about an economics major is that its quite difficult to predict the type of student it produces. Some can be the most driven, intellectualpeople you will ever meet, while others will have you questioning how they graduated at all. Among the social sciences, econ is easily the most challenging, useful one. There are few liberal arts majors with give you the opportunities an economics degree can, you can't really compare it to something inengineering though.

Hey Rex, if you don't mind me asking, what college do you go to? I am a econ major as well, currently at a CA community college looking to transferhopefully by spring 09.

There are certain limits you can get with a BS or BA though. There's a guy I know that is going for his masters in the same field that I'm gettingmy BS in. He's pretty high up in the DWP and said that he's capped at his wage until he gets his masters. I do agree with what you said for the mostpart though...my friends with degrees in History, Sociology, etc. are working in fields that don't relate to their majors. One of them has a boss thatonly has a high school diploma and despise her passionately.

ricerocket-Rex attends Cal State, Northridge.

Rex, congrats on graduating after this semester, dude! I'm one semester behind you.

everyone I know that has an econ degree is working in the accounting field....

An econ degree is great with a relative minor or a double major. Stats, math, poli sci.. all great. An econ degree also opens doors for you in terms of phd, mba, law school.

I am minoring in stats and am planning to obtain an MSA after undergrad

I go to Cal State Northridge, which is called CSUN for short. If you are not from the Southern part of the State, it is in the San Fernando Valley, which isin the Northern Half of Los Angeles.

I have enjoyed going to school there. If you don't know, the social scene if pretty dead but that is not a big deal for me because I usually drink withmy friends or go to clubs down nearby LA or Hollywood. The fact it is pretty low key at CSUN and in the Valley in generl has been good for my grades. I usuallyam pretty focused on school and I am able to not be distracted and I do the readings for class, talk to professors in office hours and also hangout with myclassmates. It is cool that the department is small enough that by your junior year and certainly by your senior year, you should know most of your classmatesand some of the profesors may be able to recall your name if they see you.

Look all around when you consider the school to which you want to transfer but give CSUN a look at if you have some questions, PM me question that you mighthave and I can tell you about the good and the bad stuff about going to school there.

Thank you although I graduated high school a year earlier then you I believe. I recall you said you were HS class of '03 and I graduated in '02. Thefunny thing is that graduating took me so long because I was so unsure about what I should pick for my major. In the end, it's all good though because I ampretty well rounded having taken a lot of Poli Sci and English classes and those compliment my history minor and econ major well.

BTW, what degree are you going to end up with after the Fall semester?
