This decade is a great one to remember.

2000-2009

MUSIC
  • Hip Hop becomes the choice of music for urban youth. MP3 Players Dominate.
  • Artists such as OutKast, T.I., Kanye West, Ja Rule, The Game, 50 Cent, Nas, Jay-Z, DMX, Missy Elliott, Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Nelly, and Eminem were the dominant hip hop artists that have represented the hip hop genre in this decade thus far. Distinct regional differences also developed outside the hip hop/rap strongholds of the 90s, New York City and Los Angeles. "Crunk" hip hop (which eventually gave way to snap music in 2005) emerged in the south, particularly Atlanta, resulting in southern hip-hop dominating the mainstream for most of the decade. The New York scene remained strong, coasting on stars such as 50 Cent, who released the most anticipated hip hop debut album in more than a decade, Get Rich or Die Tryin' in 2003. Eminem was the best-selling artist during a certain period of the decade, with the Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem Show selling 10 and 8 million copies respectively. Eminem has sold over 70 million albums worldwide.
  • Rock has remained popular, despite the increasing popularity of Hip-hop, with both genres about equally popular among youth.
MOVIES
  • Thousands of full-length films produced during the first decade of the 21st Century. Building on developments in the 1990s, computers are used to create effects that would have previously been more expensive. Also gaining popularity was the use of (CGI) to produce films.
Harry Potter, Pirates of Carribean, Spiderman series dominate this decade.
TV
BOOKS
  • The 2000s saw a steep increase in the acceptability of literature of all types, inspired by the coming-of-age of millions of people who enjoyed the works of such writers as C.S Lewis and JR Tolkien in their youths. Neil Gaiman for instance, one of the decade's most popular writers of speculative fiction, cites Tolkien, Lewis, and GK Chesterton as his three biggest influences growing up. J.K Rowling admits to being heavily influenced by Lewis as well. The popularity of Lewis, Tolkien, Pullman, and Rowling was spurred on by movies which proved to be some of the biggest of the 2000s. The 2000s also saw the popularization of manga or Japanese comics, among international audiences.
FASHION
  • Within Hip Hop clothing, Denim-jean jackets with matching jeans were popular, along with track suits (primarily made of fleece that matched top and bottom usually worn with a headband for guys). Bandanas with rhinestones were popular from late 2000 to early 2002 and Phat farm shoes and apparel were extremely popular during this time.
  • In Hip Hop, the throwback jersey and baggy pants (popular in the 90's to 2003) was replaced with the more "Grown Man" Look which was highly popularized and brought in by controversial rapper, Kanye West.
  • Trucker hats and vintage t-shirts from American Eagle and its many counterparts were high in popularity (2003). Holister, A&F, Etc
  • Nike Air Force 1 shoes, Jordans and Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star were popular footwear.
  • In 2005, other styles that appeared on the scene were Capri pants or pinocchietti as they were called in Italy, where they were popular. These usually stopped at just below the knee, and could be worn casually with sandals, dressed up with high heels, or worn with boots in winter.[15]
ECONOMICS
  • The euro becomes legal tender in twelve European Union countries in 2002. It is the largest monetary union in history. The euro eases trade in the Eurozone. By 2009, four more countries join the euro, Slovenia in 2007, Malta and Cyprus in 2008 and Slovakia in 2009.
  • The 2000s contained two recessions, according to the NBER.[1] The first occurred from 2001-2003, and the second began in December of 2007.
  • The US dominance over the world economy continues, but economically rising nations and organizations like China and India show signs of becoming contending world powers.
  • In 2006-2007, the United States housing market made a sharp downturn, with home sales falling to levels not seen in a decade. Median home prices began slipping. In 2007, economists raised the point of a "mortgage meltdown", referring to a dramatic rise in housing foreclosures and issues with sub-prime loans. The effects of the housing downturn on the overall economy are still being determined as of 2007, though by July-August 2007, worries over a "credit crunch" emerged and increasing numbers of economists and CEOs feared the economy would slip into a recession. The gross domestic product in the United States continued slowing in 2007.
  • In late 2007, the collapse of British banking company Northern Rock caused fear of a breakdown of the British housing market.
By early 2008, the fears of a credit crunch were confirmed, as a barrel of oil peaked at $140 in mid 2008, and as banks became less willing to lend money to each other, the public fear that interest rates could rise. Inflation is already rising across many industrialized countries. Public spending has fallen greatly, which led to the minor fall in the price of oil by late-mid 2008
  • The collapse of the American housing market caused difficulty for the two mortgage brokers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which have been subject to fears of collapse
SPORTS
  • The World Series (in 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2006), NBA Finals (in 2003 and 2005), BCS (in 2004) and Men's NCAA Basketball Championship Game (in 2004) all hit record lows in Nielsen ratings and/or total viewers in America.
  • Basketball decreases in popularity in the U.S. with the loss of Michael Jordan to retirement, the Kobe Bryant controversy, the Pacers-Pistons brawl, the 2007 betting scandal, and the Seattle SuperSonics relocation to Oklahoma City; a new television deal signed in 2002 relegates most NBA games to cable. Despite this, the emergence of stars such as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade (as well as a new collective bargaining agreement signed in 2005) helps the league maintain much of its status.
  • Baseball in the United States undergoes controversy and Congressional scrutiny due to steroids; stars such as Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, ranked #1 and #2 in single-season home runs, are suspected to have used steroids, while others such as Jason Giambi and Rafael Palmeiro are confirmed to have been using the drugs. Thanks to two consecutive years of Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees American League Championship Series, however, ratings and popularity for the sport (while lower than previous years) still remain high.
  • The Boston Red Sox break the 86 year "curse" by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series (they also won in 2007). The following year the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros to win the 2005 World Series, winning their first since 1917.
  • 2000 XXVII Summer Olympics - Flag of Australia Sydney, Australia (most gold medal wins Flag of the United States USA)
2002 XIX Winter Olympics - Flag of the United States Salt Lake City, USA (most gold medal wins Flag of Norway Norway)
2004 XXVIII Summer Olympics - Flag of Greece Athens, Greece (most gold medal wins Flag of the United States USA)
2006 XX Winter Olympics - Flag of Italy Turin, Italy (most gold medal wins Flag of Germany Germany)
2008 XXIX Summer Olympics - Flag of the People's Republic of China Beijing, China (most gold medal wins Flag of the People's Republic of China China)

  • Michael Phelps won six gold medals in 2004 olympics, and winning eight out of the eight possible gold medals in 2008, asserting his world dominance, and most arguably, the best athlete in the world.

Science/Technology
  • A huge jump in broadband internet usage globally - for example, from 6% of U.S. internet users in June, 2000 to what one mid-decade study predicts will be 62% by 2010.By February 2007, over 80% of US Internet users were connected via broadband.
  • Boom in music downloading and the use of data compression to quickly transfer music over the Internet, with a corresponding rise of portable digital audio players typified by Apple Inc.'s iPod, and more recently Microsoft's Zune. Digital music sales rise, accounting for 6% of all music sales in 2005.
  • Flash technology reaches the point of being able to make video players. As a result, YouTube, a website which allows uploading and viewing videos, is created. YouTube's popularity grows explosively and it is acquired by Google.
  • Wikipedia began and grew rapidly, becoming the largest encyclopedia and most well known wiki in the world.
  • Major advances in Hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius, Ford Escape, and the Honda Insight.
  • GPS (Global Positioning System) becomes very popular especially in the tracking of items or people, and the use in cars. Games that utilize the system, such as geocaching, emerge and become popular.
  • On July 29, 2005 the discovery of Eris, a Kuiper Belt object larger than Pluto, is announced. In August 2006 Pluto is demoted to a "dwarf planet" after being considered a planet for 76 years. Other "dwarf planets" in our solar system now include Ceres and Eris.

VIDEO GAMES
  • This decade has been primarily dominated by Sony, Nintendo, the newcomer Microsoft and their respected systems. Sega, being Nintendo's main rival in the 1980s and 1990s, left the console market in 2002 in favor of returning to the third party company they once were. Overall the decade has seen the last of the low resolution three dimensional polygons of the 1990s and has entered the realm of High Definition games, and has often focused on developing immersive and interactive environments, implementing realistic physics, and improving artificial intelligence.
  • The seventh generation of consoles began with the release of the Xbox 360 in 2005. This was followed by the Wii and the PlayStation 3 in 2006. The seventh-generation featured widespread implementation of HD-ready graphics, media centers, and wireless game controllers, as well as complete online service for all consoles. The PS3 also has Blu-ray Disc compatibility. The Wii implemented an innovative game controller that features full motion sensitivity and is wielded like a remote, with limited button interaction. In response, the PS3 features tilt-sensitive controllers.
  • Although massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) began in the 1990s with such titles as Ultima Online (1997), Everquest (1999), and Asheron's Call (1999), during the 2000s, MMORPGs became a dominant genre among PC gaming. Phantasy Star Online, released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and later ported to the Xbox, GameCube, and PC, popularized MMORPGs for consoles, although it remains a PC-dominated genre. MMORPGs feature persistent worlds, player-driven economies, frequent content updates, and massive servers that contain thousands of players. Most MMOs also feature monthly fees to help with the massive costs required to maintain and continually upgrade the games. The MMO genre has gained much of its success by cashing in on previous popular titles (such was the case with Ultima Online and Phantasy Star Online) with such titles as Final Fantasy XI (2002), Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided (2003), World of Warcraft (2004), The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (2007), Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (2008), Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (2008), and the in-development titles Star Trek Online and Warhammer 40,000 Online. World of Warcraft, released in 2004, has established itself as one of the most popular games on the PC and set what are now the generally-accepted standards for the genre. Lineage II has established a large market outside of the United States, particularly in Asia, and is the second-most popular MMO worldwide.[citation needed] MMOs free of monthly charge, including MapleStory (2003), and Guild Wars (2004) have also proven to be popular.
