I lost my music and i'm starting from scratch ... I pretty much grew up listening to only rap and what my parents when they were together ... I've branched out and I like the idea of NT music essentials, jazz thread, rock what are you listening too ... but it's quite overwhelming to keep up with all those threads and their is just a ton of music out there ... 
In no particular order i would recommend to anyone starting a collection to have ...

it's so easy to call a band overrated and not revolutionary when you didn't witness them appearing on the scene. you take for granted that nearly every rock band since them has been influenced by them in one way or another. it's like saying the french connection's chase scene is crap compared to transformers 3...

they did nohting for rock n roll that already wasnt done. elvis and chuck berry revolutionized rockn rol. a lot of bands list beatles as their influences, yeah, but a lot of them are just being respectful.
