What's The Best Graphic Design Software For Macs?

I have no experience in any photo editing / graphic design software but want to purchase a program and mess around with it and hopefully teach myself somebasic skills. I know that it'll be tough but I plan on reading different books, tutorials, websites, etc...With that said, what's the best program fora Mac? Photoshop? Illustrator? Other? Also, any tutorials/books/websites/videos that you recommend I use to help teach myself the software?

Cons might be price, but besides that Adobe has a hold on the market. Doesnt get much better than illy or PS.

Illustrator = vector-based

And no, I'm not gonna explain the difference. Look it up.
