Agreed. I grew up Catholic and still don't see the big deal about the pope.
Not to veer too much into conspiracy theories, but I think the previous pope left under very suspicious circumstances and the new pope is the figurehead for the new revamped church. It's no surprise that the church is losing a lot of followers / $$$.

I think it's because religion is a faith-based concept with little tangibility. To Christians, specifically Catholics, the Pope is essentially like God's ambassador on Earth.

We also have a Catholic vice president right now. Kennedy was the nations only Catholic president. This pope is the first pope from Latin america which os controversial. This pope is a Jesuit and came in after the resignation of the previous pope and his child molestation, drug and corruption allegations.
The pope is not really supposed to be involved in secular matters but he is speaking to congress and doing a lot of things publicly popes haven't done

It isn't a big deal. The Pope is a clown who has consistently made it difficult for victims of priest rape to get justice. He's a criminal.
