Isn't marvel rebooting spider-man, etc.? Maybe you should check into that.

DC is rebooting at the end of this month, id say go pick up the major story arcs with marvel (civil war, secret invasion, siege, and fear itself) maybe some of the ultimate stuff (ultimatum, ultimates, etc)

well if you're going to start from there i suggest you go in order, after Civil War go into Secret Invasion, then Dark Reign, The Siege, then the ongoing series Fear Itself
Ultimates 1 and 2 are solid
Spider-Island
World War Hulk
Batman/Superman
Blackest Night
Wanted (WAY better then the movie)
if you want a LOOOONG read may i suggest the Ultimate Universe?
start with Ulti spiderman, then xmen, FF, they all end up tying up at the end in Ultimatum
ooo and new TMNT series started last month, it's great so far.
