I can't lie, as a Chicagoan, I'd say Illinois actually hates Chicago the most. If you're outside of the Chicago metro, chances are you hate Chicago.
I don't think we really hate New York, but I can't stand that people from the Northeasf consider us a flyover place. Chicago isn't New York, but heck, we've got amazing women, food, and an amazing summer time scene.

Because both areas have great schools there's a high number of people who have lived in both and settle down in the area they moved to

Cool, cool. I have to say although I live in Southern California, I think I see myself living in the North in the near future. I went on a trip with my school to UC Berkeley not to long ago, and I really liked the layout of the city, if that makes any sense.

Used to live in Santa Ana back in the days and did concrete work all over OC and se LA county..OC too clean compared to this out here. Scottsdale is just a small portion of the valley here. The rest e/s, w/s, s/s phx, Glendale, Mesa are reminiscent of riverside/San bernardino
Just as you stated though , the night life is poppin out here...
