WHY ARE PEOPLE SAYING THE WESTERN CONFERENCE HAS GOTTEN WEAKER?

-There are arguably 10 teams in the West that if switched conferences would be playoff teams in the East.

-There are about 5 teams in the East that would be playoff teams in the West.

-People say the East improved.....how? Lets break down the teams that changed. The Cavs were a great team last year, and they will now be trash. The Heat were a decent team last year, and will now be great. One gets substantially better, one gets substantially worse. So far, no real improvement. The Bulls were already a playoff team, and now should be better. The Raptors were a borderline playoff team, and now should be worse. One team gets substantially better, one team got substantially worse. So far, no real improvement. The Knicks will be slightly better than they were last year. Might sneak in as a 8 seed. When comparing this year to last year, you have a net of one Eastern Conference team being better than it was last year.

-People say the West got worse....how? Lets break down the teams that changed. Utah and Phoenix got worse, but not worse to the point that they become bad teams. They both could conceivably make the playoff still. So far, slightly worse. The Clippers with Blake Griffin could be better and fight for the 8 spot. New Orleans and Houston could be better if they are healthy and be a playoff team. Portland was already a playoff team, but if healthy should be better. Oklahoma City was already a playoff team but could make a huge leap this year. When comparing this year to last year, you have a net of three Western Conference teams being better than they were last year.

After taking all that into account, what exactly am I missing? How are the conference getting more well balanced? How is the East better? How is the West worse? Anyone?

You're kind of splitting hairs with your analysis of who is getting better or worse, it's more or less debatable.

The top 3 picks did however get drafted in the East, that's something that could be a factor down the line.

How can anyone not think the West has gotten weaker? The tide is shifting towards the East, no major additions have happened in the west. I still predict the Lakers to come out on top because of this but anything passed the Lakers and Mavs (my predicted 1,2) will be up for grabs. The separation between the top 10 teams in the west and the bottom 5 use to be 20+ games. I predict that margin to decrease to 5-10 games. While this does mean an improved west overall the team at the top of the hay stack should not be phased. So I guess the correct thing to say is the West has gotten easier for the Lakers.

all playoffs teams won 50 games last year. there wont be that much of a dropoff.

top 4 teams in the east are strong, after that its a drop off.

The tide isnt shipping, stop that. you can argue, that the difference is getting smaller, but the west is still better as of now.

And, the Wizards, John Wall. Enough said.

Philly, Evan Turner. Thats a monster wing with Jrue, Turner, and Iggy.

dont get me wrong, the west is still better, but the east is improving.

Don't think the west got weaker, but the east got stronger that's for sure.

I've always told my friends that too

very solid team, but injuries have killed that team

The Suns and the Jazz may have gotten weaker but the Rockets and the Hornets will be back. Even if Yao goes down with an injury again, they will have had a full training camp with Kevin Martin so offensively, that team could still put up numbers to be competitive with Brooks, Ariza, and Scola too. Then you got CP3 coming back so the Hornets won't be a pushover like last year. The Grizzlies were a hot team early on last year so another year might be what they need to go to the next level. The Spurs get older of course but these dudes will never go away until TD retires. Plus they got a young bench.

And even with the Suns and Jazz getting weaker, they won't be terrible. The Suns' system brings out the best of any player on offense and plus Dragic has emerged for them. The Jazz lost a lot but Millsap has proven to be a serviceable replacement for Boozer and they just gotta hope AK47 is healthy.
