Why does everybody think they are good at football?

I just noticed this...

EVERY dude out there thinks he's good at football.  Tall, fat, skinny, old.  It doesn't matter.  Is it a macho thing? I just don't get it.

Today I was playing ball and some kid was like "Yo they need to start a football team".  Then a couple other kids jump in like "yeah, I'd be crackin' dudes".  I hear and see things like this all the time.  I got a friend that plays flag football and he's always telling me some Al Bundy type stories.  My girls pops is always talking about how her brother would be good if he played, but the kid only played rec soccer.

Just stop the madness.  Thank you.

I think this is the case with any recreational sport. & yes, it's a masculinity thing.

I'll readily admit I'm not very good. 6'4 195 but no lateral agility whatsoever, decent straight line speed but not fast enough to be a WR, not strong enough to be a TE. Where I really excel is just running go routes when playing with slow/short white people. I've got Braylon Edwards syndrome though; I'll make a one handed/difficult catch but if I have too much time to think about it I'll drop a lot of easy ones.
Last time I played I was a little heavier and I just volunteered to play on the line

I was doing a great job blocking this big dude who was about 260 and I started getting a big head. Next play while I'm blocking this guy, the LB (nicknamed "Meathead Mike") came full speed on a blitz. I tried to slide over to block them both at once and that was a bad idea. After the massive collision from picking up the blitz I got off my block and released into the flat. Caught a short dumpoff and immediately got LEVELED before I could even turn around

My neck hurt but I figured I was fine, but like two days later I couldn't even move or sit up in bed without assistance, and I couldn't fall asleep because the pain was so bad. And I couldn't go to the doctor because I was in Barcelona for the week

When I got back I had to drop $350 out of pocket to get X-rayed, get muscle relaxers and pain meds and had to wear a neckbrace for two weeks.

So flag football from here on out for me

some people do flat out suck personally i kno my strengths, i kno my weaknesses...i guess many love to talk themselves up for that added confidence....i say let your play on the field talk for you

Because football has a position for people who are fat, tall, small, or skinny? lol

I swear dudes make thread complaining about other guys and their hobbies every week. Like it really does hurt their feelings or something. Where they do that at?

Well I know I should be playing

but that's just because I have very fluid hips.

Naw I'm sick of non-athletes claiming they would be good at sport.  Or how hard they would hit somebody.  Being fat doesn't make you strong.  Plus most dudes don't even have the heart to be good at football.

I hear dudes admit they suck at basketball, baseball, golf, bowling, etc.  BUT never football.  that's not a lil bit weird?

Everybody sucked at one point in their life. It's all about learning and practicing and working harder. No way you just woke all of a sudden and just be great like some of you guys make it out to be.

So stressing and making a big fuss about dudes who believe in themselves is pointless. Whether they're cocky, confident, ignorant... ect. It doesn't matter, what's it to YOU?

I've thought about this before and honestly I think it's because most of them are seriously in fantasy land.

Texas and the south being the exceptions (maybe parts of the mid-west too), most of the population has never played organized tackle football before at any level. They have no reality on which to base their perceptions of their own abilities.

Im talking about grown +%! men with 9-5 jobs.  I'm talking bout guys who never played Varsity football. These guys are making comments like they are Charles Woodson.  It has to stop.

Depending on where you live, football is usually the most popular sport, especially growing up. All you need is a football and an open space to play. More "average Joes" I know, who aren't really into sports, play pickup football because you don't have to be as skilled compared to basketball. Sure, you got those guys who do nothing but play tight defense, hustle, and rebound in basketball but I'm pretty sure you put those kats on the football field and they'd be better at football

Because I was a starting safety for my varsity team for 2 years. However my offensive skills were/are terrible. Couldn't catch block/run a clean route to save my life
mad.gif
. Tackling and coverage was not an issue though.

I think people say they are good because pick-up games of football aren't that common. You can't prove them wrong. But in basketball, soccer etc, a quick game can prove he is lying or telling the truth

OP you're talking about people claiming they'd be good at tackle football right?

This is more or less my point. People have knowledge of the game but their actual experience is limited to average pick up games with average Joe's.

. It's def a macho thing.  Just like everybody think they nice with the hands.

If only more people thought they were good at basketball and posted videos of themselves playing it.

1) Yes fat dudes think they are strong. I have a friend who is obese and he would be making up stories to all his new neighbors. Then I take him to a gym and he can't lift what I was when I was 17.

2) When you do get in a pick up game or "turkey bowl" it is usually with other people who never played or lack any kind of ability. I dominate my turkey bowl games (mostly people my age and a ton of people) and I barely survived an AFL tryout.

3) It's not just football. I knew guys sitting on D3 basketball benches talking about how they could at least make the NBDL. SMH.

I'm pretty sure I've complained about this before but on a similar note, my roommate will bring it up like once a week how sick of an athlete he would be if he weren't so injury prone. Just because he's 6'9 he thinks he could have played college ball, when I was never even good enough to start on my HS varsity team and I routinely whipped his !+@ in bball.

This dude is 6'9 and has never at any point in his life been able to dunk
sick.gif
That's how bad of an athlete he is. Even back in HS when he was in shape and was 6'8 205, he STILL couldn't dunk. I would bet that he runs a 6+ in the 40 yd dash. Dude has the explosiveness of Rosie O'Donnell. Now he's a couch potato and just sits on his !+@ all day playing video games and smoking, talking about his woulda coulda shouldas. My favorite is when he goes, "Yea, I was a sick athlete up until I broke my femur. That set me back so far; I could have been a beast." How old was he when he broke his femur? SEVEN %$#FASD@# YEARS OLD! Like dude, I think 16 years is enough time to have recovered from that injury. You have to at least have been a sick athlete after puberty to say something like that
laugh.gif

I feel bad for him because his body is just straight up not built to take any sort of athletic activity, but at the same time whenever he does gets injured he doesn't do the physical therapy because he's too lazy.

Sorry for the rant, I just can't stand when people are like this.

good qustion

unless you were an all stater in HS or were on a roster in college, odds are you werent very good

It's hard for people to accept that they are mediocre at best in any sport, and there are athletes far superior than them in this world. Most of these people's dreams of playing a professional sports died around the age of 16/ 17 years old - so they run around talking like they have the skill, because like someone mentioned who's going to go play a pick up game of football?
