Why don't they just lower gas prices to help fix the economy?

im stoned again and this thought entered my mind again. Think about it, if gas prices were at $2.00 or $1.50 /gallon, more people would gas up on the regular and go more places to spend more money, buy more cars, etc... right??

what they really should have done with giving the banks bailouts but telling the banks that everyones debt is wiped clean. start from scratch again. People would than again spend and if some got in trouble thats their fault.

that wont help, this wud only lead to deflation which is country is almost near. we need to lower taxes and increase govt spending to increase gdp. also, a tad bit of inflation wud help also

people have less money nowadays.. you don't think there's some conserving going on? I know if prices were $1-2 cheaper I'd be going all over the place

well obviously.  what I'm saying is people are still buying the gas right now.  no reason for them to lower prices.

supply and demand son. price ceilings would create a shortage of oil because oil companies wouldnt have enough profits to run their business. also this would increase our appetite for oil, pollute the environment more, get us to peak oil faster, and slow our progress on alternative fuels.
