Why is Jerry Rice the GOAT?

A better argument would be is he the greatest football player of all time, because he is easily the greatest WR of all time.
depends on your perspective... if you look at it as he in most part is the most accomplished player in football. He also is for most part undisputed greatest at his position... in one of the greatest eras... on one of the greatest teams

I mean i look at it the way ppl look at jordan.... ppl pretty much say mj is the greatest at his position... he is one of the mosr accomplished in his sport... he played in one part of one of the greatest eras.... and played on one of the greatest teams of all time.

Man, I watched 80% of Jerry Rice's prime (87 - on), and dude wasn't messing with Moss in his prime.

No one in recent history straight dominated at the WR position like Randy. The years with the Raiders and after the Patriots killed his all time status.

Jerry had the better career, no doubt. And you still gotta call him the GOAT.

Calvin? Ehh, he's getting yards this year, but he's not really having much of a impact on w's and l's. Moss and Jerry use to single handedly win games for their teams.

:lol

Where you locked up or in a coma from 2001-2006?

Randy Moss didn't win **** for 6 straight years and didn't even put up numbers in 3 of those years.

For the record Jerry Rice is the greatest receiver ever by a larger margin than any "best of" ranking in major American sports.

It not really close and as big of a Calvin Johnson fan as I am I don't see him really coming close either.

I do think he will be universally rated as the 2nd best ever in the next 3 years.

"We're all measured by how we do against Rice," Robert Massey, a New Orleans Saints cornerback, said in 1990. "I remember the first time an NFL scout talked to me right before the draft. The only thing he asked me was if I thought I could cover Jerry Rice."

Don't forget the 1987 strike shortened season. Rice had a ridiculous 22 TD's in just 12 games.:x

Went through this entire thread and nobody mentioned he went to a small HBCU school (Mississippi Valley State), and he was actually SLOW in the combine. Ran a high 4.6. There were more physically gifted receivers that came out with him, but he made a career out of ultra precise route running and an amazing work ethic. Didn't hurt he played with some of the greatest QB's (Montana and Young), played in a well defined offense (West Coast), pretty much had the same Coach and Offensive Coordinator, and he had other great players surrounding him (the other receiver Taylor was a beast as well, Dwight Clark beast WR/TE hybrid, and Roger Craig All-PRo RB).

who would you place #1 then.

One time for Steve Largent.

Good call (even though he isn't GOAT now). He wasn't physically gifted by any stretch of the imagination but he just knew how to outwork his opponents by his route running. When he retired in '89 he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). Pretty impressive.

There's never been a HOF player who wasn't physically gifted

Except for Largent. I was watching NFL Network's Top Ten (I forgot which countdown was it) but everyone agreed that Largent wasn't a physical specimen. He wasn't fast, tall, or physically imposing, he was just a superb route runner who knew how to get open with great hands. Of course he has to be somewhat athletic, but that's not what he was known for.

You know Rice is the GOAT when Largent let's him use his retired number while with the Seahawks.

Jerry, Calvin will be looked at as the second best receiver ever in the next 3 years.

I would like to know what pace Calvin is on for stats. You would think with the way the league is played now and stafford throwing the ball 60 times a game in which 80% are to Calvin, that his stats could be just as rediculous when he's done. Jerry's numbers blow my mind simply due to how different the game was played. Idk if you can match his stats unless you match his production at the end of his career. But who knows I feel like Calvin is gonna be like Lebron, 35 years old with no drop off in athleticism. Some of these athletes like Lebron and Calvin are machines and I'm curious to see how long they go because they are the first of their kind. Footballs different than basketball obviously when it comes to health but who knows.. Unless Calvin blows out a knee (knock on wood) I don't see him ever having health issues. He doesn't really
get beat up he's bigger than every DB on the field.

How are people even debating that Rice is the best receiver? All these Moss/Owens/Calvin/Andre opinions are preposterous.

Being on the same team, Owens had the best chance to get the torch from Rice, like Robinson and Duncan did, but he messed that that up.

no lol i mean as far as greatest football player ever... I mean like i said i look at it and judge it the same as how ppl say mj is the greatest at bball... Was he the greatest shooter ever no... greatest passer ever no... most physically gifted/dominant no... But when you look at the game in terms as most established, most dominant etc.... ppl say mj...

What i find funny and odd is when ppl say mj they throw up all kinda stats and records etc... he holds.. Yet if you compare it with jerry rice... rice has higher stats set more records in his respected sport then mj has in his.

So i dont get how ppl use one logic to say a player is great in one sport... and totally dismiss it in another... If ppl are saying mj is the greatest in his sport because of the records, stats and dominance in his sport, then why isnt jerry hands down the greatest in his sport?

Both are undisputed greatest at their positions, both played for teams who are regarded as one of the best teams ever in their sport, both played in a strong heavy competitive era for their sport... Only thing is jerry dominated more to a point where pretty much ppl say and believe his records wont be reached let alone broken no time soon or ever at least in our lifetime... while many of mj's feats records milestones etc... are being challenged and beaten by players currently playing.

This...most people forget this, had he had a full season, Moss breaking the record in 07' would have never happened

But like others have said, in this thread it isn't about being the fastest, especially not @ the wide receiver position, as being able create seperation from the defender probably is..... Rice def played faster than his 40 time, but the intangibles are what make him the G.O.A.T.

Jerry rice is the best of the best! Takes the hardest hits and never gets knock out. Doesnt fumble.
