I would say so they have some extra throughout the at-bat and don't have to worry about not having enough.

The purpose, one way or another, is certainly for handle grip, though. A tighter manual grip decreases bat speed, so pine tar allows for lighter holds without fear of losing the bat.

But, there are restrictions about how much and where. Isn't that right, George?

he probably uses that bat alot. he probably puts tar on the center of the bat before he applies it to the handle of the bat. kind of like putting lotion on your arm before applying it over your body. some guys put tar on the center of the bat, others put it on their helmet

speaking from experience, i put pine tar on the middle of the bat rather than the handle because like someone said above, if you put too much on the handle your hands won't come off the bat and its hard to swing. the bat is pretty much useless until you can take that pine tar off. putting it on the middle allows you to rub your gloves on it as you need it throughout an at bat.

Because if they put it directly on the handle it would be difficult to get it off your hands. They put it on the middle of the bat because between pitches they can get a little more. Like how people re-adjust their gloves.
