Arizona head coach Lute Olson …
AP - Mar 10, 3:54 pm EDT

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)-Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson is returning to the Wildcats at the end of the season.

Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood confirmed the 73-year-old Olson, who has been on personal leave since Nov. 4, will come back under a contract thatruns through 2011.

"We are delighted that Lute will be rejoining the program," Livengood said in statement. "He is one of the true legends of collegiatecoaching, and his return is something that I know will be embraced by everyone who cares about our basketball program."

Questions have swirled about the reasons for Olson's leave for months. Olson said in a statement it was necessitated "by a medical condition thatwas not life-threatening, but serious enough to require time away from my coaching responsibilities."

That's a change from a statement Olson issued on the day he took his leave. He said then he wanted to "reassure everyone that this isn't ahealth scare, but rather a personal matter that needs my undivided attention."

When the leave was later extended to the entire season, Olson said in a statement, "There are personal issues within my family that need to beaddressed and I must devote my full energy to that."

Olson was not immediately available for comment.

Assistant Kevin O'Neill has served as interim coach and has been named the permanent successor once Olson retires. Arizona is 18-13 and 8-10 in the Pac10 this season.

Livengood said O'Neill "has handled a very difficult situation with tremendous poise, and I can't begin to say how appreciative we are of thejob he has done."

Olson is 780-280 in 34 seasons overall and 589-187 in 24 years at Arizona. He's led the team to 23 straight NCAA berths, the nation's longest activestreak.

Bayless ain't coming back ....

And Budinger better leave NOW....Before

If you Arizona stans actually paid attention to your team in the past 5 or so years, you would see how Lute is having a hard time developing his players. Moreoften than not, Arizona players are no better when they leave the team than when they started on it (word to mustafa). Sometimes they are worse.

Arizona has ALWAYS had amazing recruits. It seems though recently they do nothing with these monster freshman classes. I am a UCLA fan, so I watch a lot ofpac10 games. I also have tons of friends who went to Arizona who agree with me. Im glad Lute seems better from whatever it is was wrong, but the college gameis starting to pass him by.

that team isnt a real chip contender.

and no way is bayless staying.

lute needs to hang it up and just hand over the reigns already.

enough with his drama already, it's affecting his legacy.

Undersized 2 guards have to leave when their stock is the highest....

Don't see his stock going any higher than it is now....

You don't wanna give the scouts time to find more flaws in your game...

..... he's not a 2 Guard, he's a PG in the NBA. We just happen to have Nic Wise.

Thanks for proving my point. Gilly the kid might play PG....But he is an undersized 2 guard....

No one is drafting Jerryd Bayless to run their offense....They are drafting him to score.....Like Eric Gordon

The same website that once compared Deshawn Stevenson to Michael Jordan.

NBA Comparison: Larry Bird

Strengths: Uncanny basketball smarts. Plays the game with great passion. One of the best shooters in college. Has a chance to be a special player on the NBA level because of his intelligence, desire, and abilities. Was a point guard in high school before growing from a 6-5 senior to his current 6-9 height. Still has superb ball handling and passing abilities. Growing up the son of an NBA player/coach gave him not only a great understanding of the game, but prepared him for the limelight. Kind of lulls you to sleep with his nonchalant demeanor but then rips your heart out when you least expect it, as witnessed in Duke's Championship win against Arizona. Excels in big situations.

Weaknesses: Not a freak. He's not going to blow anyone off the dribble or overwhelm them with his athleticism, but can get off the floor well and has good body control. He's pretty slow by NBA standards. But so were some of the game's great ones Larry Bird and Chris Mullin and they had Hall of Fame careers. Must get stronger, continue to develop.

Notes: "The second coming of Larry Bird" as one hoops junkie friend put it. Has that uncanny court sense of a coaches son. Amazing fundamentals and approach to the game. Crafty at getting his shot off. Excellent stroke. Very good athleticism. A wolf in sheep's clothing.

NBA Comparison: Larry Bird

Strengths: A special talent ... Old school right down to the stripes on the socks ... Like a coach on the floor ... Incredibly competitive ... The game comes very easily to him ... A great player in the half court ... Can create offense for himself or others ... Really excels with the ball in his hands at the top of the key ... Very good scorer with complete offensive repertoire ... Effortless shooting stroke ... Has great anticipation and basketball understanding ... Great intangibles, competes and inspires others to play hard ... Hard worker ... Plays with great intensity and aggressiveness ... Fundamentally solid, does all the little things to help his team win ... A true competitor. Will not back down from anyone ... Wants to take the big shot ... Sees the floor well, and is creative finding teammates for baskets ... Catches and shoots, or can shoot on the move ... Great at moving without the ball ... Finds a way to score against better athletes ... Great leadership ability ...

Weaknesses: Not especially gifted athletically ... Lacks great foot speed getting out into transition ... Runs decent, but needs a head of steam ...Better hand speed than foot speed ... Leaping ability is average ... Plays hard on defense but lacks great lateral quickness ... Lack of a great first step will make it harder to get shots off against superior athletes ...
