Need to get wireless router. Any difference in the $40 router and a $100 router?

Depends on what type of receiver you have on your laptop or computer. If you laptop/comp has a type N receiver then you should cop the $100 router. If your electronics is a/b/g compatible just cop the $40 router. Type N routers have faster wireless speeds and are usually more expensive.

Network speed, wireless technology, features/functionality, name brand recognition
Most common right now would be Wireless N, Gigabit speed.
Most reliable in my opinion would be netgear or linksys (cisco)

Thats why its refurbished it does't work well, Linksys its not the most reliable router. Get a Belkin N Router, if u have a ps3 or xbox you'll need a N router. If you don't still get a N router its like $50 bucks at best buy.

D Link is one of the better ones for a decent price. There are BIG differences between Wireless N routers as well. Take a look at Maximum PC from last month, after about 40 feet, there is a HUGE difference when it comes to range vs speed.
D Link, Belkin, and Netgear would be on the top of my list. Linksys probably near the bottom. Rosewill if you're looking for a decent N router for A/B/G prices.

N routers are backwards compatible it will work.

I'd get a dual band, but that's just me. But if you don't have an N compatible laptop then there's no point.

If you hook up ps3/xbox 360 via ethernet, do you still need an N router? speed via ethernet is already ridiculous...

Sure, it makes a 'network' faster - but if you are just using it to connect to the internet it will make no noticeable difference - as far as I know.
Someone I know bought a really expensive system (a few years ago when they were like 5 times the price) and used it with his home 2Mb broadband connection.
I would second Belkin routers - I have one at work and one at home and they have been very reliable. One died after a couple of years and they sent me a brand new one within 3 days - they all have a lifetime warranty.

you would benefit from "N" routers if you have more than 2 computers in your network, stream HD content, and/or have a gaming system (PS3, 360).

The average person doesn't even need an N router, also someone correct me if im wrong but wont an N router run at b/g speed if not every device connected to it supports N? So if you do go N I believe this is something you have to look out for. That said having a quality N router > quality G router if prices are too different.

I second that. Cisco fell off with their Linksys line. I've had bad experience with their wireless routers at work and at home. I've gone through 2 different models at home where the connection just kept cutting off when certain laptops at home would connect.
I've tried several companies like Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear. Netgear routers are awesome! Haven't had any issues in the past 3 years. I also run them at my gf's place, no problems with those either. N routers are a plus if you have quite a network going.
