Boston Red Sox fans know more than a little about superstitions -- and one apparently decided to share the anxiety with Boston's biggest rival.

Somewhere underneath all this concrete, steel and construction equipment at the new Yankee Stadium, a Red Sox T-shirt may be lurking to jinx the Bronx Bombers, according to the New York Post.
A construction worker and Boston fan working on the concrete crew at the $1.3 billion new Yankee Stadium buried a Red Sox shirt in with the concrete foundation under what will become the visitors' clubhouse, in the hopes of jinxing the New York Yankees' new home, the New York Post reported.
Two construction workers told the newspaper about the stunt on conditon of anonymity.

"In August, a Red Sox T-shirt was poured in a slab in the visitor's clubhouse. It's the curse of the Yankees," one worker told the Post. "Nobody knows about it. It's in the floors, it's buried."

The workers say they're now afraid that they've jinxed the Yankees.

"I don't want to be responsible for sinking the franchise," said a second worker, who witnessed the burial. "I respect the stadium."

"I guess if the Yankees go 86 years in the new ballpark without a win we'll know if we are on to something," the worker said, referring to Boston's title drought after the franchise sold Babe Ruth.

Chris Wertz, the co-owner of Professor Thom's in New York's East Village -- a haven for Red Sox fans in the Big Apple -- thought the move was a stroke of genius, according to the report.

"I won't be surprised in the least bit to see that visiting locker room torn up and relaid right away," he said, according to the Post. "This is what makes the game special for baseball fans. It's not a mean thing, but something they will take seriously."

There is a precedent for fans burying trinkets for good luck. During the construction of the ice rink for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a worker laid a Canadian one-dollar coin (known as a "loonie") at center ice. Canada went on to win its first gold medal in men's ice hockey since 1952.

And Mickey Bradley, a co-author of "Haunted Baseball," told the Post that a worker was said to have buried an unknown good-luck charm in a water main trench of the current Yankee Stadium back in 1920.

"Prior to that, they never won a World Series," he said, according to the newspaper.

But the Yankees said they're not concerned that a piece of Red Sox-colored cotton could be lurking under their feet at their new home.

"It sounds like a tall tale, and it would take more than a Red Sox T-shirt to put a curse on the Yankees," team spokesman Howard Rubenstein told the Post.

Thanks to good ol' mafia controlled construction, those two workers will also be buried in the stadium.

God I hate Red Sox fans. At one point they were lovable losers, but now they are just downright annoying. (and NO, I am not a Yankee fan)

reminds me of the Canadian Loonie burried in the Salt Lake City ice at the gold medal game.

No real point to it.

if the Yankees do decide to dig up the visitors lockerroom

Why would it be in the visitor's locker room?

This worker must be an idiot.

Crisis, and curse, averted.

It took about five hours, but the Red Sox jersey that was embedded in the concrete of the Yankees' new stadium to place a curse on the New York franchise has been unearthed with jackhammers.

Earlier this week, a construction worker who is a Boston fan working on the concrete crew at the $1.3 billion new Yankee Stadium buried a Red Sox shirt in with the concrete foundation, in the hopes of jinxing the New York Yankees' new home, the New York Post reported.

The newspaper reported Sunday that two workers approached a construction manager with what they thought was the location of the jersey. After digging a two-foot by three-foot hole, the jersey was found.

"They absolutely pinpointed that if it was in the ground, that's where it was," Yankees spokeswoman Alice McGillion told the newspaper.

Initially the Yankees denied the jersey was ever buried in the footings of the new stadium. But clearly the Yankees brass is happier now with the possibility of a curse gone.

"I hope his co-workers kick the [expletive] out of him," Yankees co-chairperson Hal Steinbrenner said.

The newspaper said the jersey felt like a filthy rag, but the word "Red" was clearly visible.

The Yankees plan to donate the jersey to charity, and may pursue a lawsuit against the construction worker.

There are precedents for fans strategically burying trinkets for good luck. During the construction of the ice rink for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a worker laid a Canadian one-dollar coin (known as a "loonie") at center ice. "Prior to that, they never won a World Series," he told the newspaper.

The Yankees went on to win 26 world championships since.

Why not bury it in the Yankees locker room?? But this has to be the funniest thing I've ever heard from sports.

I agree with the guy up top. Before Red Sox fan's used to be lovable losers, but now they're just annoying.

I hope some of the New York faithful beat the construction worker into the ground. Hopefully the Yankees organization presses charges against this clown, andmaybe some extended jail time in the process.

That was gangsta by the Yankees for digging that #%@@ up.

However, Hal just needs to shut up. He's starting to get on my nerves.

douche bags is the word.

This rumor spread around the city construction workers like an epidemic last August...I'm not a Yankee fan so I initially didnt care....what's buggingme out now that they have actually removed the sawx jersey is that there was also another rumor spreading around right after that which indicated that thisincident spawned a copycat incident "somewhere else."
