Writing Sample?

So, Barack Obama's Organizing for America is offering me an internship and they want a writing sample. I've never had to send in any type of writingsample in my life so I'm at a loss. I don't know if I should send in an old high school essay, or a letter, or just write some type of analysis on apolicy issue. What do you guy's usuaully send in for writing samples? And what do you suggest I send?

I think an essay would suffice. I was going to say one that you've written for college, but not sure you're there yet.
