Different era. Star Wars changed film in terms of special effects and the science fiction action genre, plus the market was mush less saturated.There are many crappy science fiction action films a year, at least. Star Wars was it for the late '70s. In fact, people laughed at the concept back then.
In terms of acting and writing, LOTR wins the battle, but in terms of importance, it's no contest.
It's like Citizen Kane. The movie is boring as hell and the concept has been done much better since, but what it did for cinematography and storytelling,it will never be matched.

And... you would be wrong.
LOTR is freaking awesome, but Star Wars represents internal conflict and external chaos. At it's most simplistic plotline, LOTR is about one person rescuing all of humanity. That's awessome, but the Star Wars saga is not about humanity being saved; it's about the struggle to do what is right, over and over and over again, without ever failing to do that (word to Lando).
