Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

What's your guys take on using someone else's address on applications and/or your resume? I'm from Florida but I'm in the process of trying to relocate to the DC Metro Area. Been applying since January but haven't had any luck so far so I'm thinking about using a family friend's Maryland address.
It works, I used to do this with my grandmothers address. Then when I got calls I would try and explain the situation to the caller and sometimes they were understanding sometimes there would be no follow up whatsoever.

The worst is when you get the "Can you come interview in two days" phone call, because they think you live there. Twice I have just taken that leap and paid for the plane ticket for that quick trip.

Something that I was told by someone who contacted me after I gave up on that plan but was still applying out of state was to put "Willing to relocate" next to your address on your resume. made sense to me and I started doing that with good results as well.

Ok nt I graduate in December but I can never get a call for an interview when I put in an app... I have a resume but no cover letter...and I use my resume...I know you guys aren't physics but do you have any tips for me?
You need to develop an effective cover letter....besides complementing your resume it allows you to sell yourself to the employer who is looking at not only a heap of candidates but candidates who perennially have every asset you think is why they should hire you.  you cover letter should max out at 5 paragrahs (1.5) intro/personal philosphy. educational experience, work experience, tangential skills that speak to the position, closeout. The resumes without a cover letter are the last ones I look at because the format will be the same and there's nothing to parse out the candidate.

Trying to move to the States. Going to brainstorm ideas on how to stand out when applying for jobs as I'm obviously at a slight disadvantage with being from New Zealand.

Desire is seriously stronger than ever, not going to give up until I achieve this.

See the thread hasn't been active but hopefully someone can assist me. I have a Degree in Bus. Admin focus of Bus. Mgmt but I do not know what other jobs to apply for. I'm trying to improve from my current situation because it was not what I expected. But I am not sure if I really qualify by just looking at the qualifications of different jobs out there. What jobs do Bus. Mgmt graduates apply to? any insight would be appreciated.
I am assuming you graduated from undergrad, and with that your degree is broad and actually should give you alot of flexibility in the market. I am assuming there's a reason you pursued your degree, you need to go back to that rationale and ask yourself what needs to happen next to get to that point. That will give you scope of where you need to be looking for work. Also, you will need to hone some level of specialty from your educational and work experience as the generalist nature of your degree will a) undervalue you in the market with regards to salary offered and b) ensure you end up doing nothing remotely interesting to you.

Your biggest asset is you speak english ... your biggest deficit will be needing to be sponsored (H1-B1 visa, etc). As you probably know getting sponsored for work in the state is very (very) difficult but some work arounds friends have come up with include enrolling in college (for the J-1 Visa which allows you to work up to a year post graduating), teaching in a high-need school in a major city (New York City's school district sponsors hundreds of internationals each year for this), working with a national company (for you) that has or is looking to have a presence stateside. I am currently in NYC and as such whenever I am hiring for a position I get a ton of international applicants .... here's some takeaways for you:

if you have an international number 9/10 times you won't get a call for an interview BUT this can be remedied by buying a cheap SIM card with a US number (or VoIP number) and use that number on your resume and have that number forward to your phone for callbacks.

small nonprofits and small business are willing to entertain international candidate but there's an internal fear once the company has paid the sponsorship fees and the employee is working stateside -- they'll start looking for the next better paying gig. the potential employer needs to fill comfortable you will stay with the company.

US companies are not able to ask your status .... nothing is more irksome then to get down to 1 or 2 candidates after a multistage interviewing (and most office-y jobs will have multiple interviews) process and to have the candidate you are about to offer position to then note s/he will need sponsorship. If you go past an initial interview and the posting hasn't noted it is willing to sponsor the right candidate then at some point you should broach it with the interviewer to ensure you don't waste your time interview with  a company that can't interview you.

H1-B1 visas applications happen early in the year ... usually the application window ends around late March early April. You should get familiar with the visa you will need to work stateside (H1-B1 is the most common but there are specialty visas as well) as that will shape the window for looking. Basically, companies who think they will need international workers put in a pre-application before they start looking so not surprisingly those companies heavily recruit around the same time.

Thank you so much for the advice. It's crazy because New York is number 1 on my list in where I would like to go. I've visualized myself workign and living in New York since I was 5

I have no idea why, I moved to NZ when I was 5 and only visited LA when I was 2 years old. I really do think it's my purpose in life, I can't explain any other reason why I have such a strong desire to go there

Interview with Verizon Thursday. I feel good about it. I have experience in third party Verizon sales and with my current job, I've built a fairly good rapport with the managers of most of the Verizons in the city.

I hear the reps make mad loot, like 50k easy, up to 85 if you hustle. That's life changing for me.

To my Bros out there looking, stay positive and motivated. It's a job looking for a job.

Right now just enjoy the freedom. If you eating and not in the streets, be grateful.

Im looking to move to the DC area myself and I am using my boys address. I need to start sending bills out there or get a notary for residents. But anyway like Antidope said I would get a call for the company  wanting to know if I am willing to move to DC while never getting a call back after.

Now I have the option of catching a flight whenever for an interview as if I live there. But I say its best to have a DMV address unless you have the experience to back up

To touch on this I was shocked by how many people I knew that were trying to find new jobs that did not have cover letters. You can really use the same one over and over. They're a total miss or make thing from what I know, a bad one can ruin you, and a good one only slightly helps/doesnt at all, but I've heard too many stories from people who hold HR positions that while they dont read the cover letter if they see a submission without one they skip it.

I made a generic draft of the cover letter that I use for my apps and gave it to all my boys, IDK if it'll help but it I'll post it anyways.

I will add that for those that don't have professional experience but still have experience, attest to that in your cover letter. Most of these employers scream experience w/o a clue as to what it takes to get it and don't want u if u don't have it. I have a year+ in web design through the courses I've done but not professional exp and they just ignore that. I've actually been meaning to do a cover letter that speaks on that to let them know "look, I got the skills, just because I don't have the professional experience doesn't mean that I am not capable of performing the job efficiently."

I just got on with AT&T not to long ago. The money is good fam. I wish you luck.

Got this interview tomorrow, wish me luck. I'm at a SERIOUS disadvantage because of my lack of experience, but this salary is huge step above my current job and the work is something I actually would ENJOY doing.

Life is too short for me to spending 9 hours a day, 40 hours a week doing some **** I don't at least somewhat like to do. I'm wasting away at my current job.

Had my one-way online interview yesterday and like I assumed it was terrible. It's so weird looking at a camera to answer questions under a time limit no matter how easy or hard they are. On to the next.

It's good seeing all of these interview/job offer posts. Bout this time last year we saw so few of these and it's been rough. Glad to see we're all still pushin to be great.

Repped Sir!!! Good looking out
No problem bros, glad to see it was of use to people.

So the company I had a 2nd interview with a couple weeks ago called me again and want to have a conference call with myself and one of the directors.

Good luck to all the people with interviews coming up, just wanted to reiterate to never give up. I actually got 3 job offers after I was getting rejected left and right, not even getting call backs at times. I went from having no options to 3 options, with a lack of experience in my field. Persistence is key, just gotta find that motivation.

Had an interview with Speedway for there Co-Manager position. Hopefully I get the second interview. Going to call BMM Transportation next week to check on the status of everything.
