Sorry to hear that. Go to your state's unemployment website for more specific details.

Got an interview tomorrow, and one question always stumps me...when they ask what my main weakness is. I just don't know a really good way to answer this.

I always start with "Well.. An area I've focused on improving in is..."

"Weakness" implies something you can't overcome. Something you've accepted that as an unbeatable obstacle. Essentially, this is you saying "Hey potential employer. You're going to have to live with this if you hire me and there is nothing you or I can do about it."

First step, erase the word "weakness" from the convo and your mind. Then think back on a task or project where you could have done better.

Personally, I tend to take on a lot of work by myself when I have a team. While the project still gets completed, its not completed in the most efficient manner. Therefore, I'm learning to engage my coworkers more to delegate tasks, receive their input, and make sure everyone accountable for the project (in the client's eyes) has a stake in it.

Question:

On your resume, do you put the month you were hired or the month you started? Just want to get different perspectives.

The month of the start date listed on your offer letter. To be even more specific, the month of the first day you started earning pay.

Whatever you list on your resume better matchup with what your HR dept has on file. More often then not, your start date is the date the company started paying you/you started logging time. Not the date when they extended, and you accepted, an offer of employment.

Thanks, some really good insight. I've been brainstorming things to say, but that intro definitely puts me in the right direction. Repped.

It's getting rough! Day after day with no results. I don't understand, how can I gain experience if every job out here wants experienced people?!?

for those who are unemployed what was your major in college?

graduating in 2017 with a degree in history and education but i dont wanna be no teacher.

So you're anxious about your major and know the high possibility of being unemployed after graduation?

Why not change it up? I don't wanna see you come back in here in 2017 and asking for job search tips, fam.

2.5 weeks ago I interviewed for a dream job. Interview lasted 70 minutes. I'd say that 60 of the minutes went really well. The bad ten minutes was a segment where they essentially questioned if I was trying to use the job as a stepping stone, not make a career out of it. In reality I'd love to have this job and would be ecstatic to stay for years!

I have a friend who works in the office and said I'm still alive for the next round, but they're still interviewing and haven't finalized round 2 interviewees yet. At the end of the interview the guy told me he was going on vacation for a week and that he would contact me "in a few weeks". I'm thinking of giving him a call tomorrow just to emphasize that I really want the job and was just wondering if they have made any decisions about the next round. Would this be appropriate? Is it good timing?

You don't have to be a teacher with a history degree. I was a HST major and have worked with people who were also HST majors who made something of themselves in other fields. I work in media, digital to be specific. Coding, QA, interpreting analytics and producing content is just some of what I do. Most people in the workforce are working in areas that their degree didn't require. On the flip side, I know people with IT degrees who aren't doing IT related work because they couldn't get interviews and when they did they bombed them.

CJ003,
2.5 weeks is more than enough time. Email don't call.

I'm too far in to change it now. and besides, i could always be a teacher as a back up.

This History degree is worthless b. I'd give it back to PITT to wipe my debt  I paid so much money for this thing and I'm not even using it. Granted I was supposed to go to law school after undergrad but cost outweighs the reward. Now I'm self-learning coding through Free Code Camp.

u go to UMDCP, correct? if so, start interning in DC somewhere...if you feel you are too deep into the curriculum, than start getting exposure to other aspects that can go on a resume, not just from classes...maybe keep on with your current course work, but intern at the National Education Association or some other trade association/non profit to get exposure to the industry as a whole...

I'm not a history major but Environment studies. I'm learning coding on free code camp also. Tired of my degree not allowing me to flourish in a city were people are doing very well. My field is full of employees that need to retire but hold on to plush jobs because they do little work and get 6 figure salary acting like gate keepers.

I'm going to learn Javascript, then node.js and go from there. Tired of not getting paid what I'm worth.

Try to get into scripting languages when yoy have a chance... ruby, perl , python. it's harder to find people with those skills so they are worth more.

Any suggestions for applying across the pond. Specifically the UK.

Have you done your homework and figured out what type of visa you will need, who is responsible for filing what and when, who are the big UK firms to take on internationals, what US (local) companies have offices in the UK....if you don't do your homework it will be a difficult market to get into. I lucked up -- I ended up working in the UK (Cardiff - 6 months, London - 2 months) through my US-based company who took care of the applicable visas.

Word up, Python is easy to learn too as well as Ruby. I've read that Python is a little more versatile w/ Django.

osek206 osek206 We should pair up and do some Bonfires sometimes b. How far are you? They just restructured the map so I'm on the new JQuery stuff right now.

Completely down to pair up on the bonfires. I finished up the html5/css and almost Javascript but the restructuring has me going back to html5 with the added lessons.

I'm glad they got rid of the code Academy stuff. Lots of bugs on code Academy. Only issue so far with freecodecamp is the difficulty finding the answer if you get stuck. The chat is cool, but to many people are talking about random stuff at times.

Yea, true. I started out on Code Cademy before I found out about FCC. Does your city have a Gitter and/or Facebook group? My local group meets once a month for Code 'N Coffee to go over things and just get together to help others and learn new ways of completing things. The group is smaller so it's easy to get things answered if need be. That and Stack Overflow help also.
