NEW YORK -- Michael Vick is back with Nike more than two years after the company severed ties over the quarterback's involvement in a dogfighting ring.

The managing director of the agency that represents Vick announced the deal Wednesday while participating on a panel at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium. Michael Principe of BEST referred questions to Vick's agent, Joel Segal, who did not return calls from The Associated Press.

Segal told SportsBusiness Journal that Vick will wear Nike shoes, gear and apparel, but would not reveal the terms of the agreement.

"Mike has had a great relationship with Nike and is excited to be part of the Nike team again," Segal said.

The deal is the latest step forward for Vick as he seeks to rehabilitate his career and his image after serving 18 months in federal prison. On Sunday, Vick played his first regular-season game since December 2006.

The former Atlanta Falcons star signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 13. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave him his full reinstatement Sept. 3, saying he could return to the field in Week 3.

Vick participated in 11 plays, accounting for 30 total yards, in the Eagles' 34-14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, as Philadelphia tries to use him in a variety of ways as a backup.

Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in the dogfighting ring.

Vick agreed to a $1.6 million deal with the Eagles, with a team option for the second year at $5.2 million. The club has received little backlash -- protests have been limited, and the Eagles' sponsors have stood by them. That experience could make companies less wary about adding Vick as an endorser, though the biggest determinant may be no different from any other athlete: how well he performs on the field.

really happy for him...a sig may be some way off until he earns his respect again, but at least he's gettin some air under his wings...only time will tell, but if this is confirmed, i'm happy nike didnt give him the cold shoulder. i still believe if it wasnt for the legal pressure and the threats of boycottsnike would've still had him under contract, but thats just my foolish opinion

Nike is taking a BIG risk.

but it will pay off.

Not to start the whole debate, but.... pigs are smarter than dogs + NFL plays with pig skin = boycotting one NFL team for dogs dying and supporting other NFLteams means you still support animal cruelty and death. Sorry.

As an animal lover, Vick still makes me sick to my stomach BUT he paid his debt to our society within the scope of US law and should be allowed to move on.

I doubt he'll be having a sig model any time soon, maybe he'll just wear a team model and probably do a tv spot. Based off of my assupmtions

Yeah, but its highly unlikely that the NFL is breeding and manipulating pigs under horrid conditions for sheer entertainment and/or money makingvalue like Vick's crew did with dogs.

Simply playing with a pigskin ball that you had little-to-no involvement in manufacturing is not on the same level as breeding, coaching, abusing, and killingdogs in the name of fun and money.

^maybe, but Kobe never admitted to, nor was found guilty of, committing any crime.

Vick on the other hand, admitted guilt, was sentenced, and served a prison term...

Vick paid his debt, but Kobe and he are totally different scenarios.

I think this has potential to backfire on Nike if they aren't careful... hopefully Gentry Humphry isn't making any PR decisions for them!

Business question, fair or not: In this economy, why give potential consumers another reason to avoid buying your product?

I'll wear a pair of Vicks shoes, but I still won't rock anything Kobe Bryant. I love him as a brother, but as the brother I would not want to look likein any way, shape or form. Vick's shoes I'd wear just to piss off PETA, and the rest of those christian right wing maniacs who are against him. I HOPEthey are made with REEEEEEAAAALLLL leather too!

Interesting question but I believe u answered your own question earlier based on what transpired in the circumstances within thisscenario...he's served his time "paid his debt", and there are a lot of people, maybe even more than those who want him out of the league period, who wants the guy to get a second chance and earn his respect. like i alluded to in my originial comment, he wont come back to sigs and major contract money,no chance- cuz then Nike would be acting a fool with it.... like Roger Goodell has done with him, he's being spoonfed back into respectability andcredibility and I think for his potential there is still alot of upside and thats the business risk Nike has decided to take...the dude is going to do justfine

footballs aren't made of pig skin...they're made of leather.

I don't think Nike is taking a risk in Vick at all...if you ask me they should of never dropped him!

This news puts a big smile on my face!

Welcome Back Mike!
