The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Heading out to Japan next month and would like a camera for mainly traveling shots. Nothing out of this world in terms of price. I want to start capurting my shots for future travel use. Thanks in advance [emoji]128077[/emoji][emoji]127997[/emoji]

Only you can decide what "out of this world" is price-wise.

In terms of point-and-shoot, the Sony RX100 is widely regarded as one of the best in class. You can probably snag an older model for a "good" price.

need to get a decent tripod, I had NO IDEA the good ones were so expensive
If you don't plan on doing any hiking with the tripod, you wont really need one of those fancy carbon tripods.  You can get some really solid metal ones for relatively cheap.

I've owned a cheap tripod and still haven't upgraded. I would say the downsides of a cheap tripod is just the build and sturdiness which really makes a difference. There were so many times when I am shooting in bad weather conditions where my tripod would move ever so slightly due to the head being not as strong or the tripod not having certain features like the spike bottoms on the legs, additional anchor support from hanging your camera bag, etc. Also if you plan on bracketing shots, you really want a tripod that doesn't move at all.

I've owned this for a couple years

Amazon product ASIN B008JE4S6G
Got it from Costco for $80. Extending the legs is kinda annoying cause it uses this screw method, but it's solid. Holds my T2i + grip + Tamron 17-50 very nicely.

Do you need zoom?

Do any of you guys use tools to track invoices and contracts? Or do you just do verbal agreements for clients?

Word. Don't be like me, I learned the hard way that an inferior tripod is not worth it. But you also don't have to go out and buy a $1000 tripod. MeFoto's aluminum joints are solid and have served me well here in SF with the cold/windy weather.

Verbal for now since most of my "clients" are friends/friends of friends. Plan on making invoices via PayPal down the line

Sony A6000 or A5100

Ended up buying two tripods. One 50 dollar davis and stanford cheapo for travel. And peiced together some Benro legs and a vangaurd pistol grip head off B&H. Im jus leaking money at this point hah I have to take it seriously now and eventually upgrade my cam body.

I know that feel all too well

Just invest in glass for now. Your lenses will live much longer than your body will.

You should also invest in Adobe Lightroom if you haven't already.

Switching to "Raw" instead of jpeg will allow you a whole new world of editing power as well.

yea i alrdy shoot raw and use lightroom

the dilemma with buying glass is switching brands. fairly certain when/if i buy a nice camera it will be an a7

i suppose there is some sort of adapter I can buy for Nikon lens'?

hey guys

been stricly a concert photographer but my boss asked if i can shoot his kid's birthday party at the gymnastics studio (7) and havent done anything like that before.

i got the a7s and lighting should be good so figure i wont need a flash or tripod really but wondering if i should be good wiht just my 24-200 or if i should borrow a 55mm prime as well.

figure should be pretty easy but any tips/shot advice would be great!

The telephoto would be my choice. But if you shoot Manual you'll need to be mindful of your settings since once you zoom in you'll need to make adjustments to ISO and Shutter Speed.

The prime of course is a great option. Either way, shutter speed is gonna be very important assuming since it's at a gymnastics studio there'll but a lot of motion. How open can the apeture get?

Took some pics downtown today. Fallin' in love with the Sigma for macro shooting and really cannot wait to get the 17-50mm

I didn't bother to edit any of em, just didn't feel like it

I recommend selling your old system and lenses if you decide going the Sony route, unless you got the dough to keep both.

Tip, buy used, you loose less when you decide to sell. Also lenses usually keep their value better than bodies.

I wouldn't mess with non-native lenses on the Emount as they are generally lacking in the autofocus. Should be great for those old/legacy manual focus lenses, especially if it has IBIS.

Does anyone else use other skin retouching programs, or does everyone use photoshop/lightroom?
