Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Movies I seen in the past week:

"The 5th Wave"
--Interesting, but not thoroughly original concept.
--Semi-twist in the final act.
--Could have gone without the romance, but its Hollywood. Trying to reach a broad audience, I get it.
--Could have been executed better, kind of anti-climactic. I believe its a planned trilogy.
--Maika Monroe though :pimp:
--Didnt fall asleep.
Rating 3/5

"The Finest Hours"
--Available in 3D but there was NO 3D elements at all. None. Luckily I watched for free.
--Starts really slow, story could have been told in 90 mins easily rather than its 2 hr run time.
--Modest performances all around. Casey Affleck easily gave the best one.
--I dont know how this got past test audiences. Couldve been a straight to Netflix movie IMO.
--Based on true events and they make it known with historical context.
Rating 2.5/5

Going to see Bruce Willis in Misery tonight on Broadway :pimp:

Cool. I'm not too big on theater generally, but interested to see what you think about it. Anyway, have fun.
Never been to a play before but loved the book, it's my girl's fav book, and I could totally see Willis crushing it as Paul Sheldon so I'm actually looking forward to it. Still gotta see the movie, love James Caan.

They made a play out of the Stephen King book? With Bruce Willis?? ******* Periscope this to us JRS!

Good movie, I think Kathy Bates won the Oscar for best actress too

Caught The Martian and The Big Short this week..

The Martian: 6.5/8..Good movie, well acted, and enjoyable to watch..Nothing special though..Don't see how Damon or the film itself got nominated for Oscars..

The Big Short: 6.5/8..I liked the movie but didn't think it was all it was hyped up to be..Does a great job of enlightening people on how the housing bubble burst..The acting was pretty good for the most part..Gosling was pretty much doing the same character as a lot of his other work..Pitt wasn't anything special..Bale was okay (for sure should not have got an Oscar nom. for his role. It just wasn't much IMO)..Carell was the highlight of the film to me..He was the one who should've got the Oscar nomination over Bale..

Story of the day has been the Veronica Marks movie kickstarter. It's about to cross $800,000. Been online for a few hours. Pretty remarkable!!
weebey :smokin

I mean...damn, I wouldn't wanna oversell it or anything...but the first season of Veronica Mars is right there...maybe better than Freaks and Geeks, better than the first season of Alias....man there just aren't really shows that compare to it.

That 1 season is the best thing Kristen Bell has done, so if they're making a movie, I'm definitely looking out for it.
Hope it's good...even though a Kickstarter for something like this probably says it won't be?

Found myself in an interesting position.

I remember early last year seeing the Veronica Mars movie on HBO. Never saw a second of the show. But enjoyed the movie. Became my background noise movie for a few weeks.

Didn't think much of it after that.

After Christmas, bunch of birthday and christmas money, gift cards, and such, I found V Mars all 3 seasons on DVD dirt cheap. I figured, eh, why not?

They sat around for a couple weeks before I finally cracked open season 1 about 2 weeks ago. Last night, I finished the 3rd and final season.

I'm blown away.

I had no idea.

So, I did a quick search, and of course, there were several posts on the show over the years in here, I just didn't "get it" yet.

I absolutely loved that show, and in a very (to me) surprising twist, so did my wife. She LOVED it. She loves, nothing. Not even me probably. But this show, she loved.

Every main character. Every "mystery" of the day. Every larger story arc. Hell, the music. Everything.

Now, I see, and understand why the kickstarter made so much money, so fast.

**** I watched the 10 minute opening of what season 4 would look like, and I'm crushed they didn't get picked up to develop it. (and it also explains her convo with Leo in the film  )

I never cared about Kristen Bell, Sarah Marshall, when she was on Heroes, nothin. Never interested me. I LOVED her as Veronica. I can't imagine a more perfect role for somebody. She was glorious. Feisty, sassy, charming, beautiful, cute, evil, smart, funny, nerdy, she brought it all to the table.

Logan, Weevil, Wallace, Mac, Keith, Lamb, Pizz, Madison, Leo, Meg, ****, etc, never heard or seen any of them, anywhere else, and yet, they all were fantastic. They carried those roles so well even tho they weren't ever a real focus. They were always just extensions of Veronica, everything else was built around her. Vinny Van Lowe

Certainly a few liberties taken with the writing, I've never seen a Jail cell that's basically the Peach Pit, but hey. People could just walk up and start talkin to any ole cell mate in that town lemme tell ya.

I'm crushed they couldn't get another season or two squeezed in, but, chances are they would have hurt their legacy. They altered their approach in Season 3, I suspect because they were running out of material to work with. They rehashed a few things, charged the same guy with murder like a half dozen times (sooner or later, just actually kill someone already  ) They changed the format from one larger arc to multiple smaller ones. They left some episodes/info hanging and never explained or went back to things, clearly they needed more budget to get things nailed down, but add it all up, it may have just added to its charm.

It's not some great series or anything, Sopranos ain't losin sleep or anything, not even Dexter is, but it's great for what it was, and where it came from, and with the money they had to invest.

Not a joke, wife and I already plan on rewatching it, movie included, really soon. Might be one of those where I just put an ep on and do stuff around the house, etc with it in the background, and just let the wit dance around me. :smokin

Revenant came out in theaters this week over here, had to go see that again after watching the screener. Well worth it.
As we were walking out of the theater after the movie we heard some dudes who looked our age (21-22) saying "Man Leo doesn't deserve the oscar for this he barely said a word."
:smh: :smh:

leo doesnt deserve an oscar for that basic performance though...

dont fall for the hype

This.

Has anybody seen Anamalisa yet? I learned some stuff through another movie board that turned that movie on its side for me. WIIIIIILLLLDDD theory of what went down, that totally changed my outlook of the film. I need somebody in here that's also seen it to confirm it's craziness  . Anyways it's a very well made film. It's a Charlie Kaufman creation so right off the bat, you know it's gonna be bizarre as hell. I don't wanna spoil anything but it's most likely gonna win an Oscar so go see it for yourself. 6.8/8

MACBETH

This was a very hard film to watch even with my strong background in theater and shakespeare. I love Shakespeare but this play of his is probably my least favorite story. Faasbender is great like always but the accents in this movie are a bit too much. Jumbled, mumbley, whisper grunting, shakespearian gibberish mixed with thick scottish gibberish etc. The visuals are amazing. The fight scenes were a bit overdone, meaning that they weren't shy about using super slow-motion for every movement. Anyways from a technical standpoint, I enjoyed the movie. But it was too much of a struggle to get anymore enjoyment out of it so I'm gonna give it a 5.9/8 even though I think it was well made.

Leo deserves the Oscar for his past roles though. That's how the Oscar's work for actors and directors who should've been got one years prior.

Get used to it. I see a lot of ppl talking Leo doesn't deserve it and they gonna be disappointed come Oscar night. The entire zeitgeist is for Leo this time around.

To not give him it this time would basically be saying you're never gonna get one.

Man seeking woman is hilarious man.

First episode of S2 is spot on. Have a friend that did exactly what he did when he got a girl

The writing is perfect

i probably will end up being disappointed if he gets it

they should wait and give it to him for his next movie, there's a high chance he's going to have a better performance than this one

if he wins this year, then leo will have pulled off the greatest shallow oscar bait role of all time

Leo can win for Revenant, but he can't just go on cruise control afterwards.

I don't think he'll get complacent. His future films sound great.

is there an example of an actor who stops trying after winning an oscar?

I would think they normally get to turn an oscar win into even bigger and better roles

although leo is already at the level where he can get any role he wants

I don't think stop trying, but post-Oscar careers were lackluster.

Cuba Gooding is one example, who I think will get back in the limelight with his role as OJ. Another is Adrian Brody.

How is the Revenant oscar bait? It's completely opposite. Its not a role you typically win an Oscar for. The Revenant is this big in awards season based off the strength of Leo's and Alejandro's reputation alone. He and Matt Damon has the least baity roles of all the nominees.

cuba gooding is just a weirdo though

hmm, i dont really know adrian brody from anything other than wes anderson

The ep for his sis dating Santa was great

While still good eps and funny, I didn't get him settling for a car (I get the metaphor) and the anti-Joshsexuals  It's just his life can get depressing when they go these angles. There's the good parts of relationships they can explore in these weird funny ways too.

Here's the thing though, you're saying he doesn't deserve it cuz of how you feel about his performance not cuz among the other nominees there's some other actor that put on a performance so great that it would be a complete robbery for Leo to get it over the rest.

If I agreed Leo's performance wasn't all that good it still makes sense he'll get it this year cuz the competition isn't all that good. It's not the best year. The best male performance imo is by a guy who wasn't even nominated. Yall can talk about Fass as Jobs again but then look at the rest; Damon? Nah. Cranston? Really good but imo that movie and performance wasn't Oscar bait or featured an amazing performance. Then there's Redmayne who won it last year. Who I feel would have to have as good or better performance for that kind of role he did to win 2 years in a row (still haven't seen The Danish Girl so I can't call it yet).
