Good lookin out on the vid... will check it out when I can find 2hrs (!?).

Mixing things up with something from my very first jazz album.

Miles Davis - Footprints

Good post SinnerP....

Miles doing a Wayne Shorter tune...Love the Shorter incorporates Afro-rhythms into his songs...

Wayne Shorter - Tom Thumb

...which led me to some more Wayne Shorter...He can also just swing...

Jeff "Tain" Watts - Dancin' 4 Chicken

This just hit my iPhone while on shuffle mode...This album, Watts is a really good. In this day & age, you can't beat this quartet. It's like Avengers or Justice League assembled...

Jeff Watts (d)
Terence Blanchard (t)
Branford Marsalis (s)
Christian McBride (b)

Woody Shaw - Ginseng People

Haven't listened to Woody Shaw in ages...Pleasently surprised when my iPhone played found this in shuffle mode...Forgot his stuff was even loaded on there...

Oh been meaning to do this but never got around to it. My girl wants me to introduce her to jazz so I said I'll make a mix cd of some songs for her to listen to.

What would you guys say are some nice songs to listen to in order to spark one's interest in jazz? I have a feeling she'll enjoy more of the easy listening style with soft pianos and smooth vocals rather than something like Mingus or B****** Brew

Took a while but w/ a larger memory card for my phone, I finally started to get some jazz in my library. I'm talkin older jazz though, Billie, Coltrane, Munk, etc.8)

Woke up in a romantic mood this morning.

Hmmm... I say start her off with familiar tunes... standards.  Something she can recognize but in a jazz-style.  The good thing with standards is that a lot of various artists have had a go at it and chances are you'll be able to find different renditions to your liking.  I'd personally stick with traditional tunes and not something like a jazzed version of current pop tunes, know what I mean?

Footprints took me way back. Played that in highschool too.

Include your girl Diana Krall, specifically When I Look in Your Eyes...Also Miles Davis Kind of Blue while eating dinner would be great. Maybe Robert Glasper's last album Black Radio would be good too. It's not jazz, but it could be a decent starting point for her.

Here are some instrumentals I'd recommend. Some of these because they were sampled & she might find them accessible.

Herbie Hancock - Cantaloupe Island

Grant Green - Sookie Sookie

The Bad Plus - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Robert Glasper - Of Dreams To Come

Robert Glasper - Everything In It`s Right Place

Sleepwalker - Afloat & Wind (ft. Yukimi Nagano)

reps to both of y'all. Yeah Esperanza and Diana Krall were the first two to come to mind, also putting in some Chet just because I feel like everyone should listen to him.

Renee Olstead's first single of an upcoming album. Heard it a while back, but never was able to find a youtube video.

Robert Glasper Experiment - Tribal Dance (ft. Lionel Loueke - London iTunes Festival 9/23/12)

Good luck Wes. Let us know how she makes out...You should have her look through this thread....

Saw this vid on YouTube...Love Lionel Loueke...

Renee's voice still blows me away.  When I first heard her, I was thinking "kids just aren't supposed to know how to sing like that...".

Throw in some Coletrane and Hartman too.

Sinner P, I love the Coltrane/Hartman album but I don't think that's something a novice will like. Not sure a novice will like his baritone...

Anyone notice Clint Eastwood uses a lot of Coltrane & Hartman in his movies?

His son plays bass also. I think he's even released some recordings too...He looks just like him...

^ Yeah, I wanted to mix things up, but I see your point.

If not, this is also a good CD to pick some familiar tunes.

is anyone a fan of Coltrane's "Sun Ship" LP? I only recently was put on to it, one of the Coltrane's that kind of gets slept on but amazing IMO:

idk if it was already posted in this thread but bobby womack album from last year was incredible in my opinion

...love this album

Great Japanese fusion

And for kicks.. the ill sample flip
