Has shoes today become the sportcards of the 90s? vol. look who is camping out

I am a little bit younger, 30.  I think people around my age have more in common with people a couple of years older, rather than a couple of years younger.  When i was collecting cards i loved it, and its the same passion I've always had for sneakers.  But that feeling you get when you are just holding and looking at one of your favorite cards is pretty damn close to the feeling i get when I'm just looking at or holding one of my favorite pair of kicks.  Sneakers get the edge though, because i can wear them though. haha.

By the way, i follow you on twitter and you are doing great things man.  I'm a stat/data guy myself and its just awesome to see what you are doing.
I feel the same. I'm 28 by the way. I got interested in kicks when I saw MJ in the 11s in the 4th grade. I never got any expensive shoe, $100 or higher, until the 15s in the 9th grade though. Mom only got me Big 5 Nikes once a semester.

I also collected comic books and cards. Used to be hype when I got an MJ card because that would be $1 automatically  I loved Spawn and got the number 1 comic book for a birthday around 1997 or so, was super amped.

I buy here and there, mostly the models I liked as a kid. It's so saturated that almost something comes out on a weekly basis.

I got my first job in high school just to buy sneakers once in a blue moon when retros were $125 and $150 was for the newest model. I had no issues taking the bus to cash my check then to the mall to buy a pair. Now you have to buy within seconds

I see a lot of stores doing payment plans now so I do feel bad for kids getting into huge debt because of this.

Wait, Kids are going into debt for sneakers? smh. These kids need some better guidance man.

Yep. You can do the math. I was making minimum wage and commission in high school. I think I was making about $400 or so per month working 15 hours per week. No way I would be able to shell out $200 plus for Lebrons and that. The 17s were already too much at $200 for me

Yeah, you are right.  I see these kids on twitter and IG with more expensive kicks than i have, and i'm a grown man with an MS and a well-paying job.  I guess i just always assumed that mommy and daddy were buying them all for them.

With the accessibility of credit cards and releases dropping every weekend, it is very easy to see.

I'm young, but I'm old enough to remember sig models having maybe 4 colors at the most drop within the year. I remember 94 Jordan retros failing at retail and stores putting them on the table (some of y'all know what this was) for $30. Now those same Jordan retros fetch half a stack.

Trust me, it'll be over. Rappers and celebs are the main reason Jordan's/Nike's are so popular right now. They'll soon move on to something else and it'll be over because most of the kids won't think "it's cool" anymore.
How old are you? Rappers have been wearing sneakers since day one and that is something that will never cease. You will always have celebs who prefer the casual fashion of sneakers too, look no further than Robin Williams who has been up on sneaker fashion for decades. This isn't the stock market and this so-called bubble isn't really a bubble, it's the new norm.

I spoke on this in S&T, after my daughter was born, I sold my enourmous collection of baseball, football, and basketball cards, hundreds and hundreds of boxes/binders, etc, all for a grand total of like 600 bucks. :smh:

My gf at the time, now wife, when we first started dating, we would go out on a Saturday morning and I would hit FIVE shops in the area, and she would search for cards, looks thru binders, etc all helping me build my collection.

So a few months ago, after being out of the game for about 10 years, I decided to get back in the hobby.

This was all I had left of my huge collection a few months ago.

1000

This is where I was at a month later.

1000

And I don't have a more recent pic as of last night or anything, but I would say I've doubled this pic up to now.

I will never get back to the level I was at when I was younger probably, but at least I will have a piece of it back. Sportscard collecting was my first true love, a hobby I picked up from my father as a small boy.

Now I give extra cards I pick up to my daughter, and she seems to enjoy collecting different cards, sorting them, and putting them in boxes like her daddy does. :smokin

It looks like you have some older boxes/packs there.  Is it tough to find unopened packs/boxes from the late 80s/90s?

Old enough to be ya pops. I've been around since we were wearing Timberlands with shorts and Reebok Classics.

When we were younger the technology was so much different.  Back in the 90s and before, you didn't really see what other people were rocking outside of where you lived (besides magazines, mtv, etc).  Now, everyone can see what different people are rocking all over the world, with a tap on a cell phone screen.  I think this rapid flow of information makes trends/fads MUCH bigger than they ever became back in the day.

Oh Lord no. With EBay, its easy. I found plenty of unopended 80's stuff. Cheap too.

Also found some sites that still have cases (cases!!!!) Of unopened stuff.

Yeah - that is the exact point. There's still plenty out there and they are still cheap bc no one realized how much supply was being put into the market in the 80's and 90's. '89 Upper Deck was the first card company that tried to create a premium product with less supply, but they were still everywhere. Whats a Griffey 89 UD worth today? About the same thing it was worth in 1996. Seriously. And that's the fundamental difference between sneaker supply/demand and cards. People today are much more sophisticated about supply and demand. Nike doesn't publish production numbers but Matt Powell tracks retail sales and there were about 500k pairs of Jordan 11 Gammas sold last year. The point is that now we know and that knowledge is built into the resell market, which is what prevents unexpected "crashes"

That said...it was a nice trip down memory lane looking at some of the those packs. I still have my entire card collection, although it's in my parent's basement. I need to take a visit over there soon....

:wow:

I have a tub of cards in storage as well as comic books. Where can I sell? :nerd:

Such a shame to have them stored. Love them, but hate hoarding.

But I mean.....

Who wouldn't want this in their garage? :nerd:

 :pimp:

i might need to get your ebay sellers youve been dealing with..... feeling like copping a couple boxes, empting them all on the floor & opening them up one by one like i used to

That pic is of course not me folks. Just my goal, so to speak. I wish I could get to that level someday.

IM, ebay is where you can sell with ease, I know people buy cards at 10 cents, a dollar, up to whatever amount, all depends on the seller's history, the cards bein sold, etc.

I often wonder the same thing. Maybe people just lost interest? I remember it was starting to get hard to find trading card stores. Had to go to Target.

They over saturated the market.

In the mid 80's there was Topps, Donruss, Fleer baseball. 3 sets, each year. Easy as pie.

In 1988 Score joined the fray.

In 1989 Upper Deck changed the game. Photo quality pics, the Ken Griffey Jr rookie as card #1, and the premium price of 1 dollar per pack. (most other packs were 45 cents, to 60 cents)
At the same time, 1989 Score football dropped, and that featured an absolute treasure chest of rookies. Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, Derrick Thomas, Eric Metcalf, Andre Rison, etc etc.

Within the next 5 years, those 4-5 sets per year days were gone. Almost 100 or more products came out each year. There were new sets releasing literally every single week. You could get Upper Deck, Upper deck Collector's choice, Upper Deck MVP, Upper Deck SP, Upper Deck series 2, and that's just one sport. That don't even count the basketball and football products as well. :smh:

Shops, actual card shops couldn't even keep up with that flooding. And once the industry went into game used stuff like jersey's or autographs, as well as limited numbering (like the Kobe/Bron/MJ auto card on the first page of this thread, #'d to 25) the market was officially flooded.

Then something like ebay came along, and the plug was pulled.

I personally got fed up when it cost 17 dollars to buy ONE pack of something, and inside was 1 card.

In the late 80's, early 90's you could spend a buck and get 16 cards. Now you spend 17 bucks and get one single card. (premium of course, but still)

Even normal, regular, basic Topps packs today cost 2.50 and you get 8-10 cards.

I love the Hobby, but I hate the "Hobby" so to speak.

So the point of this thread, is the shoe game following a similar path? Very possible, and a good comparison for sure. The fun, or enjoyment of collecting is getting murdered by the lust for earning off it, and the true fans get driven away. In the end, the companies don't care, as long as their products sell out within hours worldwide, they continue to function, not giving a damn about the people that support them.

The major difference is that there is some functionality to shoes. The flooding will only cause the resell market to flatline, which means shoes will sit on shelves, which means *gasp* you'll be able to walk in and grab your pair with no hassle and they might even be discounted.

Im actually taking advantage of the hype right now, selling pieces of my collection.

I second that...  Searching for the Griffey, Bonds, Frank Thomas, McGwires, Ozzie Smiths, etc,etc
