STAY/GET BACK IN SHAPE VOL 3.0 -- A New Niketalk = A New Thread

I have an eerie feeling your're not squatting properly.
I definitely don't think my form is good. My low bar form is similar to Layne Norton's. Then again, some people don't even consider low bar squatting to actually be squatting. I would love to squat high bar, but I don't have the mobility yet (mainly ankles and calves/shins) and the bar resting on my traps is ridiculously uncomfortable to me.

Buy some of the cheapest Adidas powerlifts and squat in those.

Hell id go barefoot before using Frees personally.
Yo. I did some quick searches and the Adidas Powerlifts aren't as expensive as I had anticipated. I thought that I'd be seeing some prices around $190 and up. Will consider. The main problem with the Free's outside of the somewhat soft sole are that they feel so delicate; I'm used to heavy shoes with tough support so I have to get used to the lightweight feel if I continue to use them for squatting. Worst case scenario, I'll just use the Free's for cardio (which is why I originally copped them) and use my Rose 4's for everything else.

I got my one friend to start squatting and he started complaining of knee pain. I told him if he is squatting properly he wouldn't have knee pain.

Turns out he's been primarily breaking at the knees rather than hips. I've seen conflicting information all over the internet but most say break at the hips. I personally initiate with both but I haven't had any sort of pain aside from a sore back a few times when I lose tightness in the hole. What is the "correct" way to initiate a squat?

I told my friend to work on his mobility issues but I don't think he has at all. Now he wants to go back to squatting and says he'll just go light. :smh:

I figure I tried helping him but he won't listen so I can't do anything else. If he hurts himself, he hurts himself.

squat and squated in the free run 2s for years without a hitch. hooped in them too sometimes. something about the cushioning and height and level of the sole that just bodes well with my knees. I squat in roms too of course, I love the heavy, sturdy lockdown feel, but the free runs certainly feel better, for me.

low bar squat is not a real squat? who says that?
Yeah I need to hear more about this @DahStoryTella

Ive seen a guy squat 600+ in Timbs, you could try those out

Layne has horrible squat form, if you squat like that you have tight hips and weak quads probably.

It should be one fluid movement. Everything moving as one.

Just sit back as you drop down. Stay on your heels through midfoot and keep the bar in a straight path.

Maybe he needs knee sleeves. I always seem to have iritation/pain in my knees when I squat without it benzilla427 benzilla427
Yeah, I've suggested this for him and he ignored my advice. His solution is to just stop squatting.

Yeah, that's what it feels like for me. Hard for me to help my boy out cause I've never really seen him squat. He doesn't seem to follow whatever advice I give him so I guess I'll just give up trying to help him lol

Observe a child squat – it will never ever perform anything remotely resembling a low bar squat. That’s because the low bar squat is a man made game which the child is taught later on.

A proper squat is done in an upright position and the quadriceps are largely involved. That’s a true squat. It’s mostly done by weightlifters in order to build leg strength for the clean & jerk. You will rarely see a weightlifter do low bar squats, if ever.
Even on some Mark Rippetoe squat videos, you might find some comments like "That's not really a squat. It's more like a glorified good morning." I've seen some forum posts with similar sentiments.

A low bar squat can be extremely effective, and when done correctly can give your hammies a run for their money. Tons of power athletes prefer it, don't get the "not a real squat" comment.

It is effective and great for those with mobility issues.

That being said, a low bar squat can go bad really really fast, like that Layne Norton video. Chest drops way too much, his hips are shooting up and his chest is by his knees, *cringe*

High Bar squats take a lot of mobility, and it definitely destroys the ego if you are coming from a sports background.

Had to deload tons, and mobilize a lot to get comfortable with the HB Squat.

Did the CF Football cert a couple of weeks back, they do the low bar squat. I struggled going to my old ways. Good thing I guess.

There's plenty of people that low bar squat and stay upright. As long as your spine isn't rounding over then its fine, it allows you to move more weight which is the whole point of it. I cant do a true low bar because it feels like its slipping off my back the whole time.

A squat is a squat regardless of bar placement, depth being a whole different can of worms.

Nobody in their right mind should teach/teaches an athlete to low bar squat. Do some athletes do it that lack mobility issues? sure. Its not something ideal that you teach to an athlete. I've only seen kid low bar squat cuz his HS trainer was an old school powerlifter.

Layne Norton's squat is hard to look at even if he is strong..... but the way he hypes himself up bothers me even more lol

Messed up my ******* shoulder at the gym. Started incline bench at first and after a set at 185 I felt a strain, tried it again and it got worse. Went down to 135 and quit. Tried to do a pushup and no go. Just went home. Probably my rotator and probably didnt warm enough but im pissed. Worst of all its my "good" shoulder. My left has always been the troublesome side but now its gonna be both. Extremely pissed the **** off.

After a 10 month hiatus due to an ankle injury and subsequent surgery, I'm starting to get back into shape. Tested my mile time after hitting the weights, put down a 7:31.  3 years ago it was a 6:10. I'll hit that faster than I think I will.

Bruh i dont run at all, Maybe a lil brisk walk for 10 minutes here and there but other than that nada

I lost a good amount of weight without cardio, But just for cardiovascular health I need to step it up.

My best mile ever was a 7:50 when I tested for Seaside Police. That sucked because it was an outside run in January and it started flurrying. Cold air activated the hell outta my asthma. Affected the rest of my test performance. Didn't help that I tested with a bunch of 18-20 track runners. I was actually one of the last ppl to finish.
