I noticed this when I was at Wal Mart last night. I haven't seen And 1 in a store other than off price stores (Ross, TJ Maxx, etc.) for maybe 6 years, so at least they're in a retail location now.

It's just amazing to think how much of a falloff they have experienced. They used to be in NBA arenas, video games, movies, commercials and cross promotions, and landed some of the best NBA talent. Now, in Wal Mart for $7.94

Remember when you used to have to buy an And 1 item in Foot Action to get the mixtape,on VHS? Or that corny *** role on the floor while going between your legs moves? Or the day after the tape dropped, everyone in the gym trying to do the Boomerang? The Pat Da Roc crazylegs?

I even got crossed by Hot Sauce 1 and he hit a step back jumper on me. He did that start to go, then grab the ball with the other hands (obviously a double dribble) yank bank move and my knees like quit or something and I couldn't even jump to contest, it was weird. I didn't fall though.

Allow us to reminisce the glory yrs

 watching that video now I realize how stupid that was.
Back in the day I remember downloading like a 7 minute mixtape clip on 56.k for like 2 days.

I know the guy who started And1 sold it his company around 04 and is now living a millionaire life, while coaching his son's bball team on the side. He launched And1 during the right time, with budding streetball culture on the rise to the mainstream.

Man, I remember when I bought some marbury's in the mid-late 90's. Cat's were like "damn, what are those?" My boy even broke the news to me and said "Those are dope....but they look kinda weak, like pay less shoes or something"

And 1 was the **** for a minute though :wow:
Their fall off really started when the people over the tour just literally up and decided to stop it, for no reason other than it wasn't amusing them anymore. That was then when all the guys like Hot Sauce, AO, Alimoe, etc. decided they would just start their own thing, own it, and therefore pocket more of the money which was Ball 4 Real, but marketing or something was lacking and that **** was in high school gyms in Montana with $6 tickets for shows on Tuesday and only doing like 20 seats.

Joe Polk (one of the announcers, not the main one who does the "Oh baby!" thing but another one) was talkin' bout how much a crook she is and how little she paid them relative to the millions she was bringing in, and how she's still making money off of them because she charges them to use their own name for other tours and license the "And 1" in the "And 1 Live Tour" which is going on now still (overseas, China is still selling out arenas for streetball). Those dudes don't make NEARLY as much money as you would think, I mean not even close. They were getting raped.

And at the same time the above was happening, the company sold itself to American Sporting Goods (which has since been sold twice), which cared even less about "the basketball culture" and thought it'd be prudent instead of making great performance sneakers like The Edge, The Starbury 1's and 2's, Taichi, 2Chi, Desire Mid, etc. that they should focus on the $30-$50 market. And as the thread suggests, the ultimate culmination of that idea selling in Wal Mart for $7.97.

Or that's the short of it, from hearing Joe Polk talk to my dude who manages some of them and Alimoe when they were in town.

I used to weartest for And 1 right before they sold out to ASG and shutdown the program. They would have kicked me out for keeping it too real with them anyways. The last shoe I did was the And1 ME8's, this is my pic in fact that made it all over the web. They SUCKED and I sent dude a link of me doing the whole rub your outsole on a wet floor then kicking the court making that "skreet, skreet" traction gripping noise with my Nike Hurache 06s then in the ME8s to demonstrate the difference in traction quality. Dude responded back to the email salty about how all rubber and herringbones in the same, blah blah blah.

Word, and AOL timing out and disconnecting during peak hours and you gotta start over and turn the monitor off when you go to bed and hope it was done when you wake up.

bruh ... not gonna lie... some of these nostalgia threads don't hit home ...

But this post almost made me shed a tear famb... beasting over the slowest connection trying to download the bootleg Volume 4...

Y'all remember the intro? When main event was on top of the roof tanning... hotsauce was in the mirror dribbling while headache was on the PS2???

True story ... and1 tapes got me a scholarship to college playing ball.

I will always have a place in my heart famb...

Still got all my tapes, and even a pair they all signed when they FIRST toured and came to some raggedy YMCA in Houston ...

Drove 45 min, but we got in, and I swear they were bigger than life to me...

Skip, ao, hot sauce, the dribbling machine, headache, main event, 50, alimoe, ... the OGS!!!

I salute y'all fambs... thanks for every thing...

I use to love watching streetball on espn 2 back in the day when they use to do the summer tours. I remember everybody trying to that rolling on the ground move while playing ball. And 1 definitely was a bit hit back then. I remember I had the very first and 1 game for xbox. that game was so much fun to play even though it did get a little repitive the more you played it. It's kinda sad that the company fell off so hard. maybe one day they could come back again and do the summer tours and show it on TV like the good ole days. I would love to watch it again if they come back. and RIP to Escalade|I

he didnt
also werent they always for sale in cheaper stores? target, kmart? :nerd:
Nah, you used to cop them ***** in the mall at Foot Locker, Finish Line, and Foot Action with the big boys for around $80. You had NBA stars like Ben Wallace, Rafer Alston, hell even Kobe rocked them when he was a shoe company free agent.

I don't think they had too many models that msrp'd over $100.

These were my favorite, the 2chi's

This. By the time it made it to ESPN and the rest of the country who didn't have access to it, it was already done. They just found a way to make $ from it. RIP Escalade |I (mama, there goes that man)

Handullz, you ever seen Springs dunk in person? That dude literally walked into the YMCA straight from the mall signing (well they detoured to go spark up) in jeans, hoody, chain, hat, and lowtop Air Force 1's, calls for a ball and did dunks that would win the NBA dunk contest any yr to include free throw line, free throw line with 2 hands, between the legs backwards with 2 hands, **** was crazy. At an open run in Kansas City, I saw Air Up There do essentially the same thing outside. He just walked out the bus, they introduced him, did the 360 between the legs, walked back on the bus. Hi Riza had on fuzzy slippers and was doing dunks, Swole damn near broke the rim off a vert, all them dudes were like superhuman to us. I hit Werm with a Shamgod though. I had a pic somewhere, let me see if I can find it

Even Tim Duncan used to watch and was influenced by the tapes.

bruh...

the air up there is from my home county... he went to hitchcock, a lil 2a school in galveston county... he cant hoop, but is super stong and finishes stupid layups...

he was onnnn... i think an 02 or 01 team that went to state, and he WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE to being the man on the squad... just a cat that had bounce...

famb was doing the 720 back in 04 in lincoln gym... his real name is Taurean or something like that... real cool dude...

the reason he got on was cuz when they used to do the tours, they would have tryouts... a gang of us went to the tryouts.. i was even on streetball for a SPLIT SECOND :pimp: :pimp:

but fam got on when they seem him just assaulting the rim... got to roll w/ them for awhile, and just stuck w/ it... used to hand out and1 gear like it was hotcakes...
