*2017 EDIT: I know I've taken most of my pictures from my first trip. You can see pictures from my second trip in my photobook here: http://www.seanhodrick.com/ttm-europe/.

Just returning to NT since the switch. I've seen others in the past post trips they've taken so I figured I would show you all a part of the world that is probably unknown. Madeira is a Portuguese island which is actually closer to Africa than mainland Portugal. I can not speak for the capital, Funchal, since I did not stay there, but it seemed most of the island spoke only Portuguese so it could be hard to get around for foreigners who only speaking English. I was told it is like Europe's equivalent to Hawaii. It's claim to fame however is that it is where Christiano Ronaldo is from. They are also known for their levadas which I believe was their irrigation system long ago.

Feel free to ask any questions

During the summer, the have many religious festivals that are pretty huge. I went to two and made a video from them.

The main drink of the island is called poncha and is a citrus rum.

It was good but I prefer more spicy food. My favorite food to get at a restaurant was called a "prego." It was a sandwich with steak, egg, lettuce, and tomato. Sometimes the bread is garlic. I had them any time it was possible.

I was very happy with my stay. It was my first time to Europe so it was nice seeing a new part of the world. I stayed with my friend and his sister. They had a lot of family on the island and spoke portuguese so they translated when needed. They hadn't been for 4 years so we were able to do some of the turisty stuff like hike the levadas.

If anyone was wondering what the popular songs were out there...

Looks like it was a good vibe, nice pics.
From the video, those were religious festivals? What was the religious significance or influence?
And were most of the people native to the island, Portugal's mainland or were there a lot of tourists?

Thanks for the love on the pics

I believe they were to celebrate different saint's birthdays but I am not positive. I know on the day of the 2nd festa I went to there was something like 7 festas going on over the island. It seemed that most people I met had a lot of history on the island. My friend was telling me how he learns new things about his family from every person in his area when he mentions his last name.

I love threads like these. Thanks for sharing OP. :smokin

EDIT: just seen your boy's sister :wow:
