I doubt I could give you an accurate estimate because I stayed with my friends family and ate with them pretty often. If you have a similar situation I could let you know.

Appreciate the pics. Love the world. Portugal is a very special place. Such an interesting people.

I once was gettin at this girl who was half Portuguese, half polish/cuban.

She told me how her family was from madeira.
she explained how back in the day, a large number of portuguese from madeira said "eff this" and rebelled against the royalty. They subsequently got exiled into various parts of the world.
she was portuguese, but her portuguese family was from guyana, so she was down with all the island traditions.
So all over the world are these madeira clan members who were exiled.
She even thought she might possibly have some asian in her too.
Any history majors correct me if im wrong

Bad lil chick man. I wish i smashed. She had a bf the whole time i was cool with her. I also felt like i was in the friendzone.

But no doubt i woulda been happy to slay that. Im drunk and just thinkin bout girls i coulda had. :frown:

Yup that's like me. I'm Guyanese and Portuguese. Lots of Portuguese resides in Guyana.

Anyways,

hod hod if you're still active, I'm thinking of taking a trip to Portugal this summer. Not sure what part yet but based on your pics, that looks like a nice city to visit. If you can drop some tips or anything I should, I would definitely appreciate it.

@G mat ic
Man I haven't posted on NT in a while! I've been to Portugal twice - both to Madeira. Not sure of your Portuguese knowledge, but Madeira is an Portuguese island that's actually closer to Africa than Europe (also where Christiano Ronaldo is from). I mention that because it would likely take an extra plane ticket to get there from wherever you're coming from. Both times I had to fly through Lisbon. The island itself is pretty spectacular scenic/nature-wise. Being able to hike the levada paths is super dope to me and the botanical garden in Funchal is world class. There's also this dope natural water pool too.

The downsides: I've been told that there's only one sand beach (the rest are rocks and stones - the locals are used to it). I never got to see that beach but I was told they ship the sand in. I wasn't able to experience the nightlife much since I was staying at my friends place in a small town an hour outside the capital. It may be hard for you to communicate on the island as well if you don't speak Portuguese. Only the youth typically speak it and many aren't too fluent.

All this being said, if I go to Portugal again (and I hope to this year), I'll be taking my talents to Porto. I've been told it's one of the most slept on cities in Europe and it looks amazing from the pictures.

Also, I've heard Lisbon is just so so, so I'll probably skip there.

If you want to see more pictures from my second trip to Madeira, you can view my photo book here: http://www.seanhodrick.com/ttm-europe/.

You can't go wrong with any part of Portugal if you're going for the first time. Depending on how long you're staying you can do both Porto and lisboa. It's like a three hour train ride between the two. It goes through villages, towns and the countryside and along the Atlantic coast so there's things to see to pass the time. Being half Chinese and Portuguese myself I've never been to Portugal until a few years ago. So my girlfriend and I flew into lisboa, spent a night there, took a train to Porto and spent 5 days there. Then went to a town called aveiro to visit my aunt for two days and then back to lisboa for another couple days. During our second leg in lisboa we spent two nights in sintra which is like a resort town or getaway trip away from the city about an hour outside of lisboa. There's definetly a lot of stuff to do and we didn't get a chance to do some stuff we planned. If you're catholic try and get to Fatima which would be a day trip from lisboa. I wish we had time to go and I wished we just had a day where we had no plans and just walked around aimlessly. Felt like we tried to stick to all the plans we made and didn't have time to really soak it all in and enjoy it.

I spent two weeks between Portugal & Spain.

Spent 3 days in Lisbon and two days in Lagos, and one day in Cascais.

I HIGHLY recommend if you got back to Portugal, visit Lagos & Cascais. Both are beautiful.

Lisbon is cool but I wouldn't spend more than a day or two there if I visit again. Nightlife is pretty good though.

It's the capital so it's the hub for single women.

Take my reps guys! Thank you! I'll have more questions in the future so feel free to bless me with more insight. I really appreciate it.

My dad's family is from Lisboa. You're right, for sightseeing, there isn't much, but nightlife is :pimp: :pimp: :pimp:, especially during the summer during Festas! So many street parties all over Barrio Alto and Alfama :pimp: I love going back there during that time.

It's my second favorite city in Europe behind Barcelona.

TONS of black people and mixed couples in Portugal (at least in big cities like Lisboa)

Also, I know you're a football fan, so

Not that a sports team is a perfect representation of race relations, but I feel that Portugal's (and France's) diverse teams show that black people are more welcome compared to countries like Italy and Spain that have practically zero black representation

Is early-mid September a good time to go? Any MUST to do or see in specific cities?

September is good if you like warm weather (around 75-80 degrees during the day, 65-70 at night throughout the country). It might be kind of empty, but people will be coming back from vacation around the middle of the month. Honestly, I can only speak on Lisboa; there really isn't any "must see" place there  :frown: A lot of the amazing architecture that the Moors built were destroyed in earthquakes hundreds of years ago, so what's left are basically semi-ruins or just quickly put together buildings/neighborhoods/forts.

Maybe get a good view from Miradouro da Graca or Castelo de Sao Jorge? Both of them are near the fun neighborhoods so it's not like you'd have to go out of the way for either. I enjoy it there more for the lifestyle, friendly locals, cheap drinks and food than the actual sights.

I've been to other places in Portugal but they were just small cities/towns my relatives lived in. Most of my family lives in Asia

Ah! I completely forgot about the Festas! I would try to plan your trip to go when they're still having them. I know on Madeira they happened pretty frequently - a couple each week if I remember properly. I know each town on the island would have their own, but from the sounds of SFC415, the bigger cities have festas by neighborhood on the mainland. I would definitely do more research on them if I were you.

Festas season is amazing. Walking around the streets all day with 2 euro caipirinhas (mixed drinks from Brasil) , 1 euro beers (warning: Portuguese beers are THE WORST. It takes me a while to adjust to them  Coronas are considered "high end imported beers" there), and drinking sangria/wine from fountains all day and then ending up at oceanside clubs that close at 5 AM...man I need to go back. I'd go back every year if my dad still funded my annual trips like he did when I was a kid

You can seriously have an amazing time partying non stop for 3-4 days and only end up spending around $100 total.

Will definitely look into all that was mentioned. Can I take a train from city to city? Deciding between Lisbon or Porto to stay in. Also, do you think a hostel is the best option? First time traveling to Europe.

Hostels are great if you're traveling alone and want to meet new people. Hotels/ AirB&B in Portugal are pretty cheap compared to other countries, but you'll miss the social aspect. See if you can find one with a private room and bath; I've booked those for around 20-30 a night before. That way you get full privacy.

I actually stayed in a hostel in Lisboa for a day the last time I went, because my relatives were out of town, and my friends were coming into the city a day later. Man, I got hammered that night, because we started drinking there at 6 PM (free pitchers of sangria, drinking games, karaoke). Then we went on a pub crawl through Barrio Alto (the bars they took us to were pretty weak though, but I was just trying to meet foreign girls, so I didn't care ). After that, we ended up at an open air club near the ocean. Didn't get back until 6 AM

You can take a train between Lisboa and Porto. It doesn't take toooo long from what I've heard, but you can book really cheap flights if you plan ahead. I say keep Lisboa as your "main base" since you have to fly in/out of there anyway on the way there/back home.
