Why is Jerry Rice the GOAT?

Is it the stats that make the final decision?

Pretty much in this case. Stats aren't everything but when you are so far ahead in many categories it typically locks it down.

Still, you could say Jim Brown, etc are "GOAT"

But in Rice's case these are some of his leader lists:

Receptions, Career
1,549 - Jerry Rice
1,222 - Tony Gonzalez
1,102 - Marvin Harrison

Receiving Yards, Career
22,895 - Jerry Rice
15,934 - Terrell Owens
15,208 - Isaac Bruce

Receiving Touchdowns, Career
197 - Jerry Rice
155 - Randy Moss
153 - Terrell Owens

Post Season Receiving Yards, Career
2,245 - Jerry Rice
1,315 - Michael Irvin
1,289 - Cliff Branch

Post Season Receiving Touchdowns, Career
22 - Jerry Rice
12 - John Stallworth
10 - 4 others

Post Season Receptions, Career
151 - Jerry Rice
88 - Hines Ward
87 - Michael Irvin

:smh:

I know stats arent everything, but just look at these stats OP. The player who is second to Rice is so far behind him in every statistical category, its absurd.

Y'all better be paying attention to the history that is being written in front of your very eyes. Calvin will be the GOAT when it's all said and done

Amen. TO is currently the 2nd best WR to ever lace them up IMHO.

Wherever he's placed (2nd or 3rd) it's a damn shame that a good amount of people don't know how much of a beast TO was.

WR is easily my favorite to rank.

He needs 1000+ receptions, 100 Touchdowns, and 15,000+ yards to pass Jerry's regular season records. Seriously, read that out loud to yourself. Ridiculous huh? The difference between Rice's Stats and Calvins Stats might be considered Hall of Fame worthy for a career! And thats just the difference between Jerry and Calvin right now.

I am not saying it cant be done, but I wouldnt say its anywhere close to being a certainty.

CJ aint passing those records, CJ is a freakin amazing athlete and WR but when your getting double and triple teamed the rest of your career, its just not gonna happen. damn shame too :smh:

Rice's work ethic and game speed is what set him apart from everyone. He wasn't a workout warrior. He was far from it. But in games, he was unstoppable.

As for Randy Moss, he's basically Shaquille O'Neal. He had all the tools to be the best ever, but didn't care enough to be the best.

Has T.O. ever given up while on the field? Can't think that I can recall him doing that. For as polarizing as he was, dude gave his all while playing. RIDICULOUS work-ethic.

For as great as Moss was, he loafed in plenty of instances. As it stands right now, I got Rice, Owens, and Moss as my top-3 WRs. When it's all said and done, Calvin Johnson WILL be #2.

He's got the stats, rings, longevity, a Super Bowl MVP, and legendary performances in playoff games. What else needs to be discussed?

I love Calvin but his career is way too short to compare right now, though he's on pace to break Rice's record for the most receiving yards in a season and could definitely surpass 2000 yds this year with one more huge game

oh, word? :rolleyes

Rice went for 92 REC &1,211 YDS and the Pro Bowl at the age of 40

The thing with Rice too is he basically never got hurt (aside from his '97 knee injury). He always was playing 16 games a season. You are going to have to stay healthy for 15+ years to get into Rice's zone

These new receivers are all playing in a new era where it's passing all over the place and soaring numbers so some of these guys (Owens, C Carter, etc) are likely going to be pushed down more and more in due time...

I'm confident in saying nobody will ever touch Jerry's records.

Nobody dominated the game of football like he did. NOBODY.

Rice's stats are unreal but i'll take Moss in his prime. No one had the league shook like he did.

His numbers overwhelm everyone else.

If I have one play left, I'd take Randy. Anything longer I'll take Rice. Best that I've seen and the posts in here summed it up perfectly by Ry and Paul

didnt even know TO had great numbers

Thats because you have been brainwashed to only see what ESPN wants you to see. Dont get it twisted. There are very few WRs to ever play the game that are better than TO.
This.

For former teammate Steve Young, the story that best describes Rice's drive comes a few weeks after the San Francisco 49ers won the Super Bowl in January 1995.

Young arrived one day at the team's practice facility to clean out his locker and saw Rice out on the field running sprints and catching passes from the groundskeeper nearly seven months before the start of the next season.

He did this throughout his entire career. Never took time off. His work ethic is unmatched.

For me what always defined a "GOAT" was the ability to play at a high level even when your skills began to diminish and you had to re-invent yourself and you still managed to be successful.

The Jerry Rice's and Michael Jordan's embody this concept.

Jerry Rice is the GOAT because when he was 40 and on his last legs he was still a force in the NFL.

Randy Moss is only a situational deep threat and can still run a 4.4. CJ and Moss are the most talented WR's we have seen in the NFL period but what difference does that make if when you are in your mid-thirties you are nothing more than a situational deep threat or a redzone target (My projection for CJ if he does not adjust to his diminishing skills as he ages)

TO had the ability to be in the GOAT class but he never became a consistent catcher of the football and has wore out his welcome in the league.
