24 Looking to build Credit... What are some good tips on your first Credit Card

Repay loans, CC, payments on time. If you don't have a CC or can't qualify cause your score is too low..

^ go for a prepaid card. Build credit with a card that has money on it already.

I know this has probably been answered already, but my credit is absolutely horrid, where can I start to rebuild it? Any company provide something for people in my situation? Even if my credit limit is low don't matter, I got cash and a steady Job, just some bad luck fraud type stuff in the past

Get a secured credit card
You send the company a sum of money, let's say 1,000. And that will be your credit limit. Use it wisely. Don't exceed 30%

Can you do this with a major credit card company? With benefits like bonus points or nah? Appreciate the info

Anyone called their cc company and negotiated for a lower APR?

Mine is 16.99% and it just pisses me off.

Have you tried? I've heard it done many times if you are in good standing with them.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you what my APR is since I've never paid interest on any cards. It's always paid off every month.

Yes, there are many companies that can help repair your credit, but it's nothing that you can't easily do yourself. Your credit score is based solely on your borrowing and repayment history. If you have an outstanding balance, worry about paying that off first. The purpose of a good credit score is to borrow money at a lower rate, thus saving money. While opening other accounts may help increase your score in the long run, until you can show you're able to better manage credit, I would recommend against the temptation since the opportunity to dig a deeper hole is bigger.

^ does paying off my old debts in monthly payments count as repairing my credit? Like I said all of this stuff was like almost 7-8 years ago. ..

Most major credit card companies and bank offer. No benefits, like bonus points or travel, anything like that. Some will have a ~30$ annual fee others are free. The advantages are that you are going to build up your credit,  you set your own limit with your money.

If they were delinquent and they're not bothering you anymore, there's a chance they've just written it off. Within 7 years from the last account activity, it'll just drop off. However, most companies just sell the debt to a collector for about 5-10 cents on the dollar, so you can easily settle for a little more than that price since they don't think they'll collect anything from you. BUT... GET IT IN WRITING FIRST before giving them ANYTHING. And DO NOT give them electronic access to any of your accounts. Make sure it's a cashiers check with a return receipt requested as proof of receipt. That's the way I would go since it's highly likely that they would keep reporting it on your record whether they are allowed to or not. IMO, it's worth it to get rid of the hassle that might come your way otherwise.

Back to the original question... Anything on your credit report, whether good or bad, will drop off in 7 years (10 if you filed BK).

Check your states laws because you may not have to pay me back because the damage has already been done.

I knw that this has been asked, but if I have a total balance of lets say, $120. Is it best to just pay it off in full (Which I've been doing), or pay the minimum balance? I keep hearing mix things about it, so I just want to know which one will give a better impact on your credit as far as it going up.

Don't think it matters but if you pay the minimum you'll still be paying the interest on it. I usually pay off the entire balance at the end of the month.

But I believe the biggest factors are credit utilization and length of credit. I think the number everyone talks about is 30% of your total credit should only be used. I think these two affect your credit the most

Ok, that's good to know, thanks! So, when you pay your balance in full, has your credit score shot up?

My credit score per capitalone credit tracker is over 750 but those two factors you mentioned are at a C level for me. My oldest credit line is only 3 years and available credit is under $15,001. Obviously only time can get me over 7 years old but I need more credit to get about $15,001.

FYI per the credit tracker, on-time payments is the biggest factor

What do you guys think of the amex gold preferred card? Saw it was 2x on supermarkets and gas, but that annual fee of 175 tho..

Anyone just getting a credit card, I would recommend paying off in FULL each month.  However, if you really need to make a big purchase then something like the Citi Simplicity card, is really good 18 months 0% interest.  Also no late fees EVER, and no annual fees.

Yea that's kind of a deal breaker.  You're better off getting something like the BankAmerica Cash Rewards, they have 3% on Gas and 2% on grocery year round and no annual fees and the rewards never expire.

I have 2 derogatory entries on my credit. Paid my mortgage late 1 time (wasn't even my fault, glitch in THEIR system told me I was good and payment went through then a few days later told me I was late and still reported me) and I guess it's making me get declined. I applied for a Cha$e and never heard back, I want to get rid of my little FirstPremier $300 limit, 84$ annual fee, infiniti % one.

Anyone ever use any of these credit counseling services or whatever? If they can really get that removed, it might be worth it

whats the best way to remove derogatories showing up thats 7 years old? isn't that the statute of limitations? :nerd:

No its not, another collection agency can bid on the debt and pick it up... So it will keep showing up on your credit report

Your going to have to dispute the debt with the collection agency and your credit report. Make sure to mark that they are regaing the debt

and it is 7 years from your last payment

I do credit repair. if anyone need help just hit me up

gold preferred not worth it. The Amex Everyday Preferred gets 3x groceries, 2x gas and 50% more points when you use it 30 times in a billing cycle. $95 annual fee. Thats the card I'm getting next. Still gonna upgrade my green to a regular gold though... just because I'm a little vain.

Actually, 7 years is the statute of limitations unless you filed bankruptcy or had a foreclosure (but state laws may be different). Just because someone buys an old debt doesn't mean the clock gets to start over for them. That's why debt collectors get such a bad name because they break the law regularly. Most times they buy it for 1-2 cents on the dollar and try to collect knowing full well they can't legally demand anything, but that most consumers don't know that.
