According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers will get a second-round pick this year and “a similar pick in the 2014 draft” in exchange for quarterback Alex Smith.
2 second round picks for alex freakin smith???

Wow!!! Who would have thought that Alex would have netted us a 2nd rounder and a conditional pick? Harbaugh and Baalke are geniuses!!!

Now is the time to reinforce the defensive line. Trading up and grabbing a stud like Star Lotulelei to rotate in with Justin Smith and Ray McDonald would be beastly.

^^ Star has the heart problem that doctors discovered at the combine... I'm not sure if there's updated information regarding his status but I'm sure it'll probably hurt his status

For me, I'm just not certain Revis is going to be 100% healthy and will be ON the field the entire season, for any team let alone us potentially.

That's a fair reason to be concerned. I'm not overly concerned though. Even a 80% Revis is better than Carlos Rogers.

never thought alex smith would command a 2nd rounder, let alone a 3rd rounder next year-- given the circumstances.

unbelievable.

happy trails alex.

Improving the defensive line and pass rush is more important than getting Revis. The reason the dbs were "exposed" in the playoffs is because the 49ers had no push. T brown and C Culliver are good players. With Justin Smith and Ray McDonald having to play 90% of the snaps the entire freaking season they were exhausted not to mention JS was injured. Aldon Smith was also dealing with a shoulder injury and playing every snap was also wearing him down.

If the 49ers can use those picks to reinforce the line, being able to subsitute some good, young DTs would help out greatly. Hopefully Darius Flemming and Parys Harylson will provide depth next year at OLB.

Improve the pass rush=secondary will improve. They go hand in hand.

ps Donte Whitner is horrible in coverage. He needs to be replaced.

btw I am lucky enough to get to hang out with 49er legend John Taylor on a regular basis(hes dating my best friends mom) and he thinks the 49ers could let Goldson AND Walker go. He says they feel good with what CJ Spillman and Garrett Celek have shown behind the scenes and the draft is rich in safetys/tight ends.

Yeah I hear ya and I agree with you, but if a 80% Revis is only on the field 20% of the time (hypothetical speaking) I would rather go with Carlos who is pretty much going to be on the field 100% of the time between the two.  No doubt about it though, Revis is the goods.

Quick question fellas, how far is Modesto, CA from Candlestick Park??

You're entering Colin Kaepernick territory there. Modesto is at least 1.5 hours away. Maybe 2.

Yikes, thanks for the response.  I ask because my frat brother moved to Modesto a few months ago, so I figured next year I will attend a San Fran home game for Candlestick's final year, and just stay at his place.  Didn't realize how far his place would be, but for a free spot to stay at I guess I can't complain.

Alex for two 2nd rounders? I guess wasting that 1st pick in the draft was worth it! Kudos Alex, thanks for managing the games in 2011 and part of 2012 to get your value up! Adios to the noodle armed sorry excuse for a 1st overall pick in the NFL draft.

Any word on Goldson? I'm very nervous that we might not give him the long term contract he deserves!!! :x

What I would do:

1) Trade for Revis
2) Dump Carlos Rodgers
3) Resign Goldson
4) Dump Whitner
5) Move Goldson to Strong Safety
6) Move Culliver to Free Safety
7) Draft a corner or 2

Secondary rebuilt. :pimp:

Baalke straight fleeced the Chiefs, I was hoping for a 3rd-4th rounder at best.

1) Not a huge fan of Revis
2) Agreed
3) Agreed
4) I like Whitner, brings the hammer.
5) Disagree
6) Not big on Culliver
7) Ideal, but Harbaugh rarely plays rookies.

I know it's a homer pick but wouldn't mind them scooping up Robert Woods late in the first round/early second. Solid route runner that enjoys blocking and stuffing db's in the run game. Not likely since they wasted a pick on Jenkins last year.

Deuce, Modesto is about 2 hours away and all around terrible place.
Thanks.  Sounds like I'll be out in the middle of nowhere, oh well.  I'll convince him to take a few days off from work so we can at least spend the bulk of my vacation out in San Francisco.  Good looking out.

yo. just heard the 'news'.

this has got to be one of those too good to be true moments.
i'll believe it when its official
