USAJOBS is good you just have to know what you are doing. The system rejects alot before a human even sees them. Blanks and incomplete info are automatic rejected. The system automatically matches words from your profile with KSA's. If you dont have those matches you will get rejected.

The following PDF should help with filling out the applications.

I work in government as well but I never really went through the process. I had a connect coming out the military. I am now starting over and having to teach myself this stuff all over again.

I will add that government resumes or longer than private sector resumes. My govt. resume is literally 10+ pages long and my private sector resume is 2 pages.

If your not a veteran, you should look at announcements that are "Direct Hire". These positions don't give veterans preference and all those that apply will be on a level playing field. Some "direct hire" are only posted for very short time, meaning they know who they want to hire. So if you see one and its for 24 hours or a day or 2, i would pass.

Dont stop applying once you get a tenative offer (to) or even your start date, you dont have the job until you show up the first day. Iv'e seen people get there to and even a start date to have the offer recinded. Usually the agency lost funding for the position.

For better results you have to be willing to relocate. I left Houston for Chambersburg, PA but was offered a another postion in DC my second day on the job in PA.

Once your in your in. You can try and get back to where you want to be.

does anybody know what is meant by "many vacancies" for a posting that has a year long application date?

i saw on fed soup that a posting like that might be an "open register" where they collect resumes to create a candidate pool instead of having actually vacancies?
nerd.gif

its on usajobs, and the agency website itself, if that means anything...

It could mean multiple things.

They are trying to fill mulitple positions.

They are trying to fill mulitple positions in multiple locations.

Sometimes they want to get a pool for when they get funding.

Do you have a military background or something? I've completely given up on usajobs, I mostly think the jobs are troll positions.
Went to a job convention in DC and the DOT was there with a clueless worker behind the desk. He had no additional information
or tips for a more successful application.

These people get in the position and stay 40 years then hire family members and the cycle continues.
No military background I got my AF Pathways internship based off of my 1 prior internship and decent GPA. The 2nd job was with DISA full time for after graduation, but I turned it down. I have probably applied to atleast 100 jobs on USAJOBS and only landed 2.

It's a numbers game and it doesn't take long to fill out the applications. USAJOBS has real positions you just have to apply.

Need advice on application about listing an old job. I got three years work experience in my field. early on in my career i ended a job on bad terms after three months of employment. I know if I put this job down on my app and if they call it will be bad. Should I not put it down?

Most i've gotten from usajobs was like we gave the job to someone else, but you're 1st up in queue if it doesn't work out or something like that.

I'm tired of driving to DC every day. I need a job closer to home in NOVA.

What area you looking into? What's your background? My Director was just telling me that he has some Software Engineering stuff out in the Reston/Herdon area. Have to already be cleared for these though.

If they have the option to list it and then hit the checkbox for "do not contact" or can we contract, select no. I think a lapse in work might be worse, but someone else might know for sure on that. What would you say if they ask you what you did during those 3 months?

Any IT project coordinator or junior IT PM roles floating around out there? never been a true PM, but would love to get my foot in on a role like that.

Yes there are a bunch around the DC Metro area.

My current company is adding IT/Cyber Project Analysts/Coordinators to our Org Charts for each Service Line to support the Technical Project Leads/PMs.

Hit me.

What kind of questions do they ask for a security clearance? Make it seem mad intrusive.

Well that's the point, depending on your clearance level...you will have access to highly sensitive information/documents and facilities.

Initial OF 306 to ensure you are not currently a wanted fugitive. SF 85, 85p, 86, etc. depending on clearance level. 7-10 years of addresses, employment history, criminal arrest/charge/conviction record, mental illness, drug use, etc.

Suitability Determinations to comply with HSPD-12 for system access as well.

These take time...OPM is slow and suffers from ancient systems/infrastructure and overage of cases/shortage of staff. Personnel security for agencies also lacks as well.

No military background I got my AF Pathways internship based off of my 1 prior internship and decent GPA. The 2nd job was with DISA full time for after graduation, but I turned it down. I have probably applied to atleast 100 jobs on USAJOBS and only landed 2.

Intern Programs are the best way to begin one's Federal Career. You get massive amounts of training, GS level up each year (first 2-3 years depending on job), and tons of dirty looks from the lazy/older/non-degree holding/I'm just doing my time folks.

I'll warn most: If you are creative, hard working, ambitious, energetic, dedicated, determined, etc. more than likely...The Fed Gov/DOD/Agency life is not for you. Unless you love good insurance and "job security" or have a family and just want to blend in.

Get in...get trained/learn something or how to use it to your advantage...and bounce. :nerd: :smokin

You have to play the game.

Put the experience down. Find an employee that you are cool with or just use a family member and say they were your supervisor (I've used my Mom before or even a girlfriend).

Most people will only know what you tell them (applies to the clearance form as well at times).

Think Leo in "Catch Me if You Can" and realize that most people are freaking lazy and will not do the due diligence to unearth some detail like that. Play the part, be the part.

Most folks always state they were doing 1099/Consulting work as they have an LLC or some self-made company to provide the illusion that they were bossing it up.

What's good man? Long time no speak...still down at Quantico? Actually just won a seat with a Teaming Agreement for work at the MCNOSC where my old fiancée is the ISSO.

Kick off meeting is going to be like the Kick-Out meeting when she sees me in two weeks...CANT WAIT! :smokin

Thanks to all (all 20-30) that have emailed/IG/texted/called and even met me in person in Tysons during Happy Hour with my band of vagabonds for libation consumption.

I'll be working to respond in a timely fashion, but just for full transparency:

-Completing new hire process for a new position that begins 7/8
-Transitioning heavy workload and phasing out of current position after providing a 4 week notice
-Heading to Tampa Bay (approx. 6/30 -7/6)
-Coaching Baseball (AAU season/tryouts) this sucks up some time with coaches/players
-Managing my division and setting them up for success when I leave

It will probably be best for me to catch me on a call and verbally discuss. Emails get lost in the shuffle but trying to respond this morning. If you follow my IG:

@nta822 it shows I'm quite active/busy and on the move a lot.

I'll do the best I can......

Today is relaxing after Noon, big money on Cleveland and the under as GS is favored at the moment +5.

Maybe all this paying it forward will pay it back. Thanks again and best wishes to all, hope any of this helps and provides some semblance/insight.

Nice man. Yea my friend works at the MCNOSC on the networking side. I'm not in the RKB anymore but around the corner supporting the Army now. Good to see you resurface :smokin

One last piece of advice before contacting me:

The more detailed/thorough your inquiries are...the better I can try to assist and less initial back/forth correspondence required to get basic information.

If you send me an email that says:

"Hey, saw your post on NT...get me a job plz and thnks" I probably can't do much with that despite that being the demeanor and mentality of 75% of the Federal workforce.

If you want something in life, go out and get it...and if you are fortunate to have someone offer to help you along the way, take full advantage and help that person help yourself.

This is the exact reason I turned down my AF PAQ offer. Govt is for chilling if I'm still working corporate 15 years from now. It's the safe, easy route, and recent grads are severely underpaid compared to industry. With the AF PAQ program even at a GS 12 by the age of 26 I would have been making less than I started at with a govt contractor company at the age of 22.

If I ever go back to the government I'm not taking less than GS 14. I'm currently trying to land this overseas position within my company. I'd like to work overseas for 10 years , 5 years danger zone then 5 years in Tokyo.

jesusshuttlesworth34 jesusshuttlesworth34 How long should a background check take for federal government agencies? I'll be contracted out for a project with DOC so I submitted additional I-9, fingerprint cards, and other employment forms for screening. This was about a month ago and I still haven't gotten any progress after a couple emails requesting status. There is no security clearance needed for the position either.

Gov.t is slow, I'd give them 2 months.
