^There is like an orange color cast to it, it plays well, in so that its not it doesn't feel like an odd tonal range but it's a color castnonetheless... I like how you active this sort of tension with the corners with the tight framing but maybe alittle too tight. Like i take it your drawing thatphotograph and we can't really see much of the photo, I'm not saying you need all of it but more might be helpful, because as much as I like thetension its bit tight... As far as angle I think its over top looking down and with a shot like that its really difficult to hold the camera perfectly and itsnot as though you can have a tripod hold it (without getting the tripod in the shot), but maybe try seting a small level on the back of the camera to get deadflat above, because I don't think its that askew but perfectly level probably looks quite good I would imagine. As far as focus its a flat surface soclearly I think you knew you didnt need much depth of focus to get it all in focus but the paper towel isnt flat maybe just flatten the paper towel or cropmore of it, because the white part of is slightly blurred and its odd considering the rest is in focus.

Otherwise I like the shot, I think its much easier to critique a series of photos and their relation rather that technical issues of one, but maybe thats morewhat you're looking for here...

Im in the same boat. but the price difference between the D40 and D40x seals it up for me.

i got a nikon d40x months ago, and ive been using the lens that came with it 18-55 i think, so i think im ready to buy a new lens or two.

the question is should i get a Nikon 50 mm f/1.8D Nikkor AF Lens or should i get a Nikon 55-200 mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens or both

any of you guys got any opinions, or reccomend me a different lens in the couple hundred dollar range

^It really depends on what you like to shoot... You shouldn't buy one lense or another because its cheap or because you think you need more lenses. Youshould buy a lense because it fits a particular need better than the lense you have. But personally I think just based on the sharpness alone a prime lensgives you verses that of zoom lense. I would get the 50mm prime or atleast one prime lense. Prime lenses are going to be sharper than their zoom counterparters just as means how a lense is constructed. And It's the straight lense i.e. there should be no distortion on shots with it so it's good lense tohave. Where as 55-200mm gives you a great deal of range but I'd be curious to see how sharp it is and who's to say you really need that range...

thanks man yeah i really dont need the range. so a prime lens might work better for me but i dont think there is a prime lens that works with the autofocus ond40x is there?

ebayologist, you seem to have a lot of knowledge in this subject. Do you do any type of photography professionally? If so, did you study any kind ofphotography or photojournalism in school? Reason I'm asking is I'm a college freshman considering photojournalism, but my school doesn't offer itas a major. So I was wandering if it was necessary to, say in your case, study photography/photojournalism in order to make a career out of it, or if you couldjust self educate yourself, practice on you own, gain experience without studying it in school. I guess if you don't do photography professionally, this Qdoesn't really apply, but maybe if you still have got any advice, I'd appreciate it, or if anyone else wants to chime in. Thanks

^^I don't think there is, but I'm not the person to ask. KDWallace would probably know... But either way it's good to learn to focus manually. It's a useful skill.

^I'm in school... I go to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My "major" (don't really have set majors) is graphic design and artphotography. And my photography focuses more an artist and the gallery world... But there are plenty of self taught photographers who are great (there are alsoprobably alot more horrid photographers that are selftaugh as well). I don't really do or have any interest in commercial or journalism photography soI'm really the wrong person to ask about that. Most of the knowledge I share in here is more just based on a relatively well rounded understanding ofphotography, cameras, etc...

^1st Question, Yeah, You figure out the exposure. Then just take a shot with the f-stop up one and down one some or up two and down two or whatever amount youthink will work its different in different situations. you can meter the darker areas or lighter areas to figure out how much to bracket the shot for...

2nd Question, I don't think you can really bracket period without a tripod, I guess if you just rested it on something. But if you're serious aboutphotography you're going to need a tripod. And your camera must not weigh that much (I'm sure you can figure out it's exact weight some where onthe web if you don't know) so a tripod weigh rated to your camera that's not too heavy or cumbersome itself shouldn't be too expensive, maybe$20-60 depending on how big or nice of a tripod you want... I have an older tripod from when I shot 35mm somewhere around my apt thats relatively light andsmall goes up maybe like 60in. that couldn't have been more than $40 at the most...

yeah I have a tripod. I was just trying to figure out how one could take the same picture at different exposures without, but like you said it's notpossible, just wanted to clarify.

recently picked up a Rebel XT and have been playing around with it.

critique/feedback/tips would be definitely appreciated.

only things done on photoshop were cropping and adding the white borders.
