Official Photography Thread: Vol. ICan'tFindTheLastOne

I also digged the coke bottle shot, but there was something that didn't look right.

I guess kdwallace nailed it. It looks 100x better centered and sharpened. Classic Vintage Coke ad.

Mike, I'd say its a matter of preference. For me I went with the Canon because I had good experiences
with them. But I wouldn't knock the Nikon because I seen a lot of dope pics from them. Both are great
entry-level DSLRs. Try them out and see which suits you best.

Peace.

I have a question for the experienced heads. I'm still shooting SLR, but have been thinking about getting a digital sometime soon, well my boy is selling aNikon D80 and my other friend recommend I buy it off him, I just started shooting about a month ago and think this is too big of a jump, but he says it'san investment, so what do you guys suggest?

Well when you meter a shot with your internal meter, you're partially depressing the button and it gives you a meter reading (varying waysdepending on the camera) that on tells you if its too little or too much or something to the effect of the light coming in the lens based on both the f-stopand shutter speed. Well metering for the shadows is you go up close to the shadows and meter the shot so that only the darker or darkest area of the frame. Theother technique is droping a f-stop is quite common in b/w film that you meter a shot normally and drop atleast one f-stop down sometimes one and half or two.Because more so with film than digtal but i still think its true is that shadow detail is pretty much lost if you have really dark spots but light detail canbe burned in. Basically burning is way better than dodging in film atleast, probably true to in digital but I'm not 100% sure about that as I don'treally use digital beyond scanned film...

just some random pix i took with my kodak easyshare (5.0 mp, 10 optical zoom) have more pix on my canon 20D will post those pix when i get a chance.

so basically meter it in the shadow, then step back and take the shot in normal sunlight?

But if you do this, wouldn't the pic be even more over exposed? Wouldn't metering in the shadow give you a longer exposure and open the f-stopbigger so it can get more light?

...So D40x for my first DSLR anybody????

^^^Yes, but you adjust the exposure back after the fact getting the shadow detail and essential what amounts to burning in the lights whether you have actuallyburn in areas or just adjust the exposure back the otherway...

It complicates things and makes some form of photo editing necessary whether that be in darkroom, in scanning, or in photoshop (or whatever other program). You're essentially taking advantage of the advantages of each part of the process. It's like a balance that naturally is slightly offset to the lights, you're swinging it to the darks in shooting and swinging it back in to the right balance in whatever method you choose. Basically even more inforcing theidea that anti-photoshop kid is a moron... overexposed especially in film is so much better than underexposed that you could make a legit arguement slightly"overexposed" is better than an even keel meter reading...

Case in point people with handheld meters virtually always unless the exposure of some detail like a face in a portrait or something like that always meter forthe shadows... Think of it like this underexposure is not picking up all the details, an even exposure is picking up most of them, a slight over exposure ispicking up all of them, you just then have to play back the exposure alittle bit but you still have all those details you picked up... But also you have totake this with grain of salt because film has a signifcantly more range in contrast, which is why people still shoot film, so I actually don't know howtrue it is with digital i'm sure its true just probably a lesser degree, but I don't know exactly how less.

Also as much as I like weed and am intrigued as to how that weed is purple. Take it easy with the drug paraphernalia. It's one thing if its likedocumentary art or what have you and its legit art. I would defend you until they banned me if that were the case. It's a whole nother if you're justtaking pictures of your weed even if it is intriguing...

Nice stuff everyone. I haven't had time to shoot at all b/c of finals but hopefully once I'm done.

^^^Shot woulda been even doper if he got the foreground also.

Nice shots Jimmy. Tahoe??

Thanks Ebay. I'll try "metering in the shadows" next time there's a super bright background.

Kennedy Lake. North of Yosemite Park.

Craziest hike EVER! This was in early October though, if it was recent I probably would've froze to death out there.
