Air Jericho - Nikon lenses are def. better but they are way more expensive. I just actually ordered a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens ($450) today, compared to a 12-24mm Nikkor ($1600). Just do some research on the web before buying anything. Your dad is probably referring to the 18-200mm Nikkor lens. Great lens....only negative I've heard is there will be some creep in the motor when you point it up or down.

RELEVANT SX - Shot glass....white balance is off. Picture is crooked. Composition is bad....the top of the flame is cut off and no foreground or background. Second shot...looks like a shaky hand. White balance is off again. Composition is bad....not showing the whole table, cabinet in the back is cut off, cup on the left is cut off, shirt/chair on the right is cut off. if you know nothing about exposures, focal length, shutter speed....the things I mentioned above are important for taking good pictures.

thanks Jaw Knee C.. any tips on setting the perfect white balance, and/or anything else? (i.e. composition, foreground, background, focal length, etc)

Thanks for the advice Jaw Knee C. The 18-200mm Nikkor lens is the one my dad was talking about. Do you think this Nikkor lens is better to havethan the two Sigmas I have for just everyday picture taking?

Got a new 50mm for Chirstmas, because the kit lens was horrible.

Nice stuff Jimmy. The saturation thing is interesting.

Just the stuff I mentioned. Choose the subject you want to subject. make sure the whole object is in the frame and centered/straight. check thesurrounding and see if there is a foreground or background that would make the shot a little more interesting, and add that to the frame. With white balance, just play with the different options before shooting. just take some random of your subject and see what options make the colors look like what you see thruyour own eyes.

the 18-200 Nikkor will be all you need for everyday shooting. you can zoom pretty far and the 18mm will take wide pictures. plus youwouldn't have to carry two different lenses around.

FYI - by no means am I an expert or anything. these are just some of the things i've learned through this post, reading books and taking pictures (goodand bad shots...basically trial and error).

SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE!

As some of you guys know, I bought my D40 a couple weeks ago for my vacation over xmas in the Rocky mountains. I just uploaded all my pics forthe first time and theres a @%$%@$@ %!$% load of pics that are small. I mean, SMALL. But there are other pics that are normal size. Anyone know what happend? They all look good/the same on the camera screen but it changes after i upload. I just dragged and dropped the whole folder onto my desktop. So my cameramemory card is blank, and i have a folder with some pics up until a certain point/date, then the rest are basically ruined

nope. i think its because i took the first have of the pics as JPEG, and then on i used RAW, because some photographers said they shoot in raw, so i did....The pics that are good size, all open and I view them normally through windows photo viewer or whatever. The crappy ones, all are "nero encrypted'files

You probably don't have the right software to view RAW files on your computer. Try looking for it on Nikon's website. I,m not sure if that softwarethat comes with the cam (PictureProject) is the right thing to use.

Took this pic of a light... (random) but i liked how it came out. Something I'm liking about the new cam, is those things you see in the viewfinder [ ] that help you center the image better.

that was the first pic i took too with my D40. And yea, i did take about 20 shots under a minute too

.. yo PM me info on where you spent 499.99 for it. In canada right? 'cause igot mine fro 559 from Blacks and they said they would pay me the difference if I found it cheaper anywhere else in Canada.

EDIT: I put the messed up small pics into photoshop, and re saved to jpeg and they were big again. Is there something I can do that would prevent me havingto do this every single time? or should I not even bother shooting in Raw since i have no idea what im doing anyways?

Hey MyT, I asked you about your lens once in the pickup post, and I dont think you knew what I was talking about.

Well, I was wondering if you were using the Canon 50mm that's only $80 and takes phenomenal pictures.
