Official Photography Thread: Vol. ICan'tFindTheLastOne

How's the Canon A Series? I checked DP Review and saw that there's some new stuff coming out. I was thinking of starting out with this doodad

DSC_0577.jpg

It's supposed to be under $200 and has PASM (Program, Aperture, Shutter, and Manual, right?) modes. I think it's supposed to be out soon, but I'mplanning on getting it this summer. That way some reviews/opinions can build up and I can make up my mind. I checked the model it's replacing (A570 IS),and it's supposed to be good. I don't want to invest too much since I just want to learn the basics. Good pick?

^ they're a nice P&S but you're a bit limited with the features.

My wife has an older version (June last year) and my dad got his in February of last year and the manual mode isn't truly manual - you can only alter thewhite balance and a few other things - but not the aperture and exposure. It's more like a program mode.

If you want to have a little more control over taking pictures you'd be better with at least a bridge type camera if not an SLR.

Yeah, I've read similar things. I'm not really expecting too much given the price. The models being replaced go for $150 online, so I figuredthey're just point and shoots w/ some different features.
By "bridge type" do you mean something like an S5?

The S5 is a nice camera, and has great video capabilities. but its pretty expensive.

Exactly, but like SaNTi0321 said it's quite a jump in price.

You get a lot more features though - the main disadvantage over an SLR is the fixed lens and the inability to shoot RAW - although some of the newest (and mostexpensive) can now use this format.

I took some pretty nice pictures with my old Konica Minolta Z5 though and it wasn't even as good as an S5.

Yeah, sub-$200 compared to close to $400 is quite a hike. I've seen some online retailers selling them for under $350 shipped, though. I'min no rush, anyway. I'll look into it a little more. Thanks for the input, though, guys.

Cool

thanks all
btw...shouts to Jaw Knee and j2o (realize)

camera is canon 350d...(rebel XT) most of the pics i posted are from the kit lens and 50mm f/1.8

the nu retros were shot with 50mm and 430ex

i use cs3 for my post process..altho...i only do minor editing done since im not that good at photoshop....some people do layering and what not...but all i dois messing with the levels.

as far as the auto shots......theyre sort of a trade secret altho not so secret anymore for automotive photographers..lol....but my shots were totallyexperimental but im happy with the results...

and as for the animated shots....theyre HDR images..i use photomatix....i usually do 3 pics for my hdr pics.

here were my other tries.

i got my current camera later that year.

your pictures are very claer and sharp for the kit lens.

for those enterior shots of the car, you use a tripod or is somebody in the back holding the camera.

My alma mater. Graduated from SLO in 2000. Those pics bring back memories. Hope you get accepted....it's a great school.

Nice stuff Pat. I noticed you've been practicing the HDR.

Anyways, here a few from my son's Blue Belt testing the other day. No flash, fluorescent lights, fast moving objects, hand held....the f2.8 reallyhelped in this situation.

all good. i thought you were referring to the pic of him breakingthe board. the peeps faces are a lot more orange cuz the incandescent lights were right above them.

I Love AF1 - my nikon 24-85mm and sigma 50-150 are very sharp lenses. you can also sharpen the pics in photoshop.
