Change the blending mode of the layer.

Just drop the picture in - just a random picture I found on Google:

If it's black on white then change the blending mode to multiply:

Here I've changed it to white on black (just by inverting the image):

And then change the blending mode to screen:

I like the use of black and white.

I got a question, someone help me out. I want to buy an SLR, just got into photography, so I dont want to spend all that much. Canon Rebel XT 8MP 1.8" 3Frames per Second EF-S 18-55mm Lens, is what I thought about. Seems ok for a starter, just wanted to know what ya'll think, if anyone has one. And if theblend size(is that how you say it?) can be modiefied manually?

^^ I have a rebel xt, suits my needs as i wanted something more versatile than a point & shoot. havent posted any pics lately so here are some shots takenthis weekened from a friends b-day and a gate/chinese new years ceremony in seattle. all shot with the kit lens, shame on me for sluffing on getting a betterand sharper lens. smh...

The main things it looks like you could do with are a tripod and a polarising filter.

The tripod would help in some of the shots that look a little shaky - e.g. the palm trees. It would also give you a level - often there is a little bubblelevel on the top of the legs - which would help with your horizons - a lot of them are really crooked.
The filter makes the sky more intense and reduces thehaze you see sometimes.

Here's an example.

The picture on the right looks much better using the filter. They're not expensive and make a nice difference.

also kdwallace - what the difference between a polarizing filter and a UV filter? also, the tip of my lens rotates as it auto-focuses... will that affect thepolarizing filter? thanks...

^^^Polarizing filters block certain wavelengths and colors to achieve a certain effect or look (more blue in the sky, eliminate reflections/glare, moresaturated colors, etc). These filters are usually not always left on the camera lens....more like use it when you want that effect...sorta like pre-productionof your pics.

UV filters are used to block UV light to protect your camera/lens and reduce the amount of lens flare. You can keep this filter on your lens 24/7 to protect itagainst the harmful effects of UV rays and also banging your camera around....its cheaper to replace a UV filter than a camera lens.

And no, the filter screws on directly to the front of the lens, so it won't effect it when it's auto-focusing.

lets say my lens is convex. will i need to get a convex filter? or will it screw on without touching the lens?

I don't Pat is using any filters to achieve that effect. Its just good lighting.

And you won't need a convex filter if you had a convex lens. Actually, and anyone correct me if I'm wrong here, the glass in all lenses are eitherconvex or converging.
